I have a 2004 Pontiac Sunfire. When the car is in idle the air blows out hot and the Temperature gage rises and the car over heats. When the car is moving the air blows out ice cold and the temperature gage goes to normal. Can someone please tell me what's wrong?

Sounds like your cooling fans on the radiator are not working. The fans are activated by a thermol switch on the engine or radiator reading the coolant temperature and an A/C switch. When the coolant is too hot the fans should activate cooling the system down. And, when the A/C is on the fans should also activate in order to cool the condensate so the A/C would work.

When you are driving, the movement of the vehicle throught he air is providing enough air flow to keep things cool and functional.

I would check the radiator fan fuse or fuses first. If those are OK I would try to run the fans with 12 volts and a ground that I supply just to see if the fan motor(s) actually run when powered. If the fan don't run when powered then the fans are bad and will need to be replaced. If the fans do run when you power them manually, then something is not allowing the power to activate, like a relay, control unit, or wiring.

It will take a little diagnostics, but it is not too difficult to chase it down.

SOUND LIKE LOW COOLANT LEVEL.NOT ENOUGH COOLANT IN THE SYSTEM YOU HAVE AIR IN COOLANT SYSTEM WHEN CAR OVERHEAT WHILE SITTING A FEW MINUTES. IF CAR START OVERHEATING WHILE SITTING IN A LONG TRAFFIC LINE.SOUND LIKE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR BAD NOT COMMANDING THE COOLING FANS TO TURN ON AT A SET TEMPERATURE.CHECK COOLANT FAN FUSE AND RELAYS MAKE SURE THEY ARE GOOD.HOT WIRE MAKE COOLANT FANS WORKING.IF NOT COOLING FAN NEED REPLACING.IF COOLANT FANS WORK OKAY.REPLACE THERMOSTAT AND RADIATOR PRESSURE CAP.YOU WILL BE ON THE SAFE SIDE TO KEEP ENGINE FROM OVER HEATING BLOWING A HEAD GASKET.BUT LIKE I SAY YOUR PROBLEM IS LOW COOLANT LEVEL OR COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR NOT TURNING ON COOLING FANS IF CAR IS SETTING OR MOVING IN A SLOW TRAFFIC LINE.

Most likely, your Idle Air Controller (also known as Idle Air Bypass) is sticky or simply malfunctioning. Your Throttle Position Sensor may also be defective.

I have a 2000 Pontiac Sunfire 2.2 its saying its overheating but no smoke under hood also blowing cold air then it finally blows hot air and temp gage goes down

I would start at thermostat. It could be it is sticking and taking a long time to open. If it isn't a bad stat then I'd say there is a good chance it could be a head issue. either the gasket or the head itself. Have you overheated it lately? Also make sure your cooling fan is running after thermostat opens up. If you want to check the heads have a compression test done to make sure. Hope this helps.

No Heat in 99 Taurus

Just finished fixing my daughters 1999 taurus heat. It would blow warm only when running down the road. At idle it blew cold. I started with replacing thermostat, and water pump because they are the easier fix. Still did not help. Then I replaced the heater core. A daunting job but not that hard to move the dash slighly out of the way to replace. There is a good write up at tarusclub.com. After that, heat was better but at idle, it would still blow cool sometimes. Researched and found answer. Park car on the steepest hill you can find with front of car up. Start car and take off reservoir cap. Let car warm up and keep rpms about 1500. After a while the fluid will come running out of the car and all over the place but it will bring air bubbles with it. Reduce rpm, add more fluid and repeat about 3 times. It will make a mess but after that, the heater works perfectly. We get heat long before the temp gage indicates any and it never blows cold unless you lower the temp.
