Shoot the transmission or better yet get a wire and command the overdrive itself to come on. But before you can do this look at the transmission fluid is it burnt or very very dark? And when you check transmission fluid level(car running) is it foaming or you see little bubbles. If you do shoot the transmission. Okay now check throttle cable or TV the one on the throttle body youll have 2 of them with is at wide open throttle take hold of the transmission downshift part does it have 1/4 freeplay it should cause that can affect the downshift.which in turns affects the overdrive. Now lets get to the dirty part in order for this transmission to have over drive. 2 solenoids signal must be in the off postion when the vehicle is in fourth gear . Your not slipping right? Now there is a sensor called O/d direct speed sensor(NC2) it detects rotaion speed of the clutch drum. all this does is detect shift timing by comparing NC@ sensor signal to the VSS vehicle speed sensor. this is the one on top of the transmission its called an input sensor or turbine. Now is the overdrive working yes it is does it feel like it works nope.when you turn on the overdrive and the O/D light is on its only transmission shift quality you only have 4 gears your transmission is a A541E 4 -SPD. Its working fine stop thowing part into it and dont shoot it.

HELP!!! Replaced the throttle position sensor on my 2002 camry. now the rpms wont go over 3000....any ideas?

You really need to test parts and report the tests before you change them. The readings from the OLD sensor, scanned and voltage tested (prefer both) are invaluable in evaluating a throttle sensor.
If it wont go over 3000 ever, my guess is there is a fault code somewhere or soon will be. If it runs terribly getting to 3000, but idles OK, its likely a fuel problem. Your MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR is on the other side of that rubber tube that attatches to the throttle, if the tube cracked while removing to access the TPS, it could cause that. It must be sealed tight or incorrect airflow is measured and the car only supplies enough gas to match the measured airflow past the MAF sensor.
Get a scanner, check data and codes. If you cannot...then Im afraid the hard answer is you really need to take it to someone who has one. Random guesses are never a good thing, they are at best lucky, at worst expensive and damaging. More often the 2nd than the 1st.

Burning Oil

we check oil every other fuel fill up. on old cars, every fill up
did you run car 10,000 miles to a oil change? unstated.
1qt/3000 miles is perfectly OK.
so 10000 mles is 3.3 quarts burned and off the top of the dip stick
if you drive fast, it burns more, got a heavy foot, or load in back>?
if you had done it right, you'd have already learned YOUR engines
consumption rates, and learned to check when IT , needs checking
we do this on all engines. all machines.
all engines burn oil, the exception , a church car, new, and never driven, far, or fast or for 10000 miles to an oil change.

your mech, was right, he was thinking , you dont check oil?

Misfires, caughs and spudders under load until at warm operating temp

if it has distributer cap replace it --cud be u need a new computer or havit reflashed--bad ones dont show on a scan--a bad torque converter can mimic engine issues--bad ignition parts like coil-alternator or worn ignition module can also give these symtoms--even a bad themostat that doesnt let motor warm properly--each car is different--dirty throttlbody and idle air controlpossibl--since car is old running a data stream that displays values or voltages can pinpoint bettr then a 40$ scanner

The trans. wont go into overdrive

I'm afraid its probably something inside the transmission.
There are solenoids and valves that apply pressure to the clutches.
Is the check engine light on ?
Is the fluid ok in the transmission ?

94 gmc 4x4 1500 overdrive sometimes works

Check for a transmission speed sensor fault (OBDII scan). Loss of speed sensor signal will result in no torque converter lock up, and no overdrive. Also transmission filter should have been changed at 80,000 miles. Age of your vehicle(1994) warrants the filter service. Transfer case (4WD) needs to be serviced as well.
