The distributor rotor should be pointed towards the #1 plug wire on the distributor cap.mark on the distributor housing where the rotor is pointing.put the crankshaft so the 0 timing mark on the timing cover is pointing to the slot mark on the crankshaft pulley(harmonic balancer).the cam timing mark will look like an oblong hole with a slot mark(one on each side)of it,the oblong hole should face up and centered on the head surface (not a little of center one way or the other).this is how the marks should be lined up.assuming this is a 4 cylinder motor.

I have a '93 Acclaim with the Mitsubishi 3.0L V6. The car has 115,000 miles on it. The original timing belt (and water pump) were replaced at 60,000 miles. A repair shop just told me the engine was...

GOOD IF YOU COULD FIX IT YOUR SELF.OR TAKE IT TO ANOTHER MECHANIC.IF YOU COULD FIX TIMING BELT THEN DO A COMPRESSION AND A CYLINDER LEAK DOWN TEST AT EACH CYLINER WITH CLOSED VALVES.VALVE COVERS NEEDS TO BE OFF BEFORE YOU CAN SEE VALVE CLOSED POSITION.IF AIR BLEEDS MORE THAN 40% YOU HAVE BENT VALVES YOU WILL HEAR AIR GUSH AT INTAKE OR OUT EXHAUST PIPES.YOU KNOW VALVES BEEN.I REMEMBER I HAD 1977 CHEVY MONZA TIMING BELT BROKE.BY GOOD LUCK AND GODS WILL DIDNT DAMAGE VALVES NOR PISTONS PUT NEW TIMING BELT ON ENGINE RAN FINE.WHEN MY TIMING BELT BROKE ALL MY PISTONS WAS MIDWAY OF THE ENGINE.THAT SAVE MY VALVES AND PISTON. LIKE I SAY DO BOTH TEST FIRST THEN YOU WILL KNOW IF ENGINE DAMAGED.

Timing belt broke and jump timing how do i get

If you have the harmonic balancer still attached you can align the timing marks with 0 degree to get the main block aligned. With the head removed you can turn the cam shaft till the number 1 valves are both closed and the number 3 exhaust valve is open. Take the time to inspect the valves as well. This vehicle did not come with no contact valves so when the belt broke it is possible the valves made contact with a piston and bent. I highly recommend you get the Haynes Repair manual on this vehicle from the local auto parts store as it has detailed instructions on how to get back to TDC if this happens. It also has Pictures on this. Because this belt goes around 3 timing marks aligning those after you have the pistons at TDC if you align the timing marks on the different sprockets/pullies the timing for teh valves will be correct.

How do i replace the timing belt on my '94 Plymouth acclaim?

I did it twice and if you are fairly skilled it will take 4-6 hours, if you have the V6.
Here is the steps:
1. Move car to a place that can support a jack and engine stand.
2. Disconnect battery
3. Loosen wheel lugs on passenger side front tire
4. Jack car on passenger side to lift wheel of the ground
5. Put a block under the oil pan to support the engine
6. Block car frame on left side
7. Remove left front tire
8. Remove v-belt
9. Remove idler pulley
10. Remove and support air conditioner compressor
11. Remove PS pump if you have one
12. Remove motor mount on left side and vacuum / gas connections connected to mount ( mark bolts as to locations )
13. Remove metal plate on engine ( mark bolts as before )
Tricky bolts are on the PS pump (Remove them through PS pulley holes)
14. Remove 3 plastic covers over timing belt ( mark bolts as before )
15. Note timing marks on overhead cams and crank. If none, make some.
16. Ease pressure off timing belt tensioner
17. Remove belt and replace with new. Trick here is to make sure you get the belt notches lined up. Head cams will shift when you remove the old belt. Do not tighten the belt tensioner fully or it will not perform as designed, it should be snug but be able to move.
END... replace part is backward order and drive away !!!
