With the car jacked up and on safety stands, follow the wiring harness from the taillights to the front of the car. The wire is probably pinched, burned or shorted somewhere along the way. Did you have any work done on the bottom chassis area recently? Does sound like a pinched wire.

sounds like you may have a wiring problem at the back of the truck right side underneath behind the bumper were the wires travel from the front to the rear of the truck, if you check the wires for damage, broken,green corrosion or rubbed through this is common for these trucks,check all the wiring at the back in these areas.

First just check the bulbs. You gain access to the bulbs from inside the trunk area, pull back any carpet in the way, the holder/socket should pop out with a quarter turn to get to the bulbs.

Are the bulbs out of the sockets and the fuse blows?
Take bulbs out and check again
Place one back at a time if fuse was OK with bulbs out to locate bad bulb.
Otherwise.......
Do this........if still needed with bulbs out and fuse blowing.
Put a circuit breaker in to replace the fuse of the same amperage.
It will trip off then back on.
Use a standard cheap magnetic compass........place along lighting wiring........the wire with current will cause the needle to jump as circuit breaker trips on and off.
Follow path of current to problem.....the compass will stop moving once past the shorted /grounded wire/connection.

check the wiring from the tailights back to the fuse panel, it sounds like an open connection. if i recall correctly check under the dash on the drivers side near the fuse panel for a bunch of wires in a bundle and look carefully for a wire or two that are cut/shorted/or seperated, you can also check under the drivers side kick panel by the hood release.

If the driver's side tail light is working, it's not a fuse. Use a test light to check for power at the bulb holder. One terminal will be for tail light, the other for brake/turn light. If the is constant power for tail light, replace bulb. If no power, trace wiring from bulb holder to driver's side junction. Probable broken wire between the two tail lights.

The tail light housing bulb holders are notorious for not making good contact to the tail light housing. Remove the housing, and disconnect the electrical connector. Label each bulb holder prior to removal, with a marker pen. 1, 2, 3, upper, middle, lower, etc. Remove each bulb holder, by turning counter clockwise 1/2 turn, and withdraw holder. Inspect each contact. You can bend the contacts outward a tiny bit, just flex it a tiny bit, and check with an ohmmeter for contact. Also inspect the bulb holders for melting from bulb heat, so much so that the plastic holder, which contains the bulb contacts, no longer make proper contact to the bulb. Also check the bulbs with an ohmmeter to verify that the bulbs are good. When reinstalling the bulb holders, check that the little flanges on the holders are properly inserted into the tail light housing. Reconnect electrical connector, and reinstall housing into vehicle. On a further note, with the electrical connector disconnected from the housing, you can check for voltages from the connector pins to ground, using a voltmeter. Turn ignition switch to run position, turn on headlight, and turn on blinker, or use stick to push brake pedal, against front of seat, and verify voltage from pins to vehicle frame (or connector ground pin). If no voltage, then check fuses, or broken wiring. My experience, however, is poor connection from bulb holders to tail light housing.

Well, there's too much power being drawn through someplace. Have you added after market electronics recently? If yes, more then likely the power cord has been hooked up in wrong place. Find a better source of power. Have you worked with any wiring under dash, bed, or cab? If yes, well, even if you haven't, wouldn't be a bad idea to go through and check to make sure no fried or grounded wire.
