When setting timing did you rotat the engine one cycle to see if the marks come back to TDC if not bring number 1 up to top pull cap off disturbed look at button to make sure it is in line with number 1 plug wire. Check with air pressure if you have air compressor put a foul out plug on the line, and screw it in plug hole, it should hold pressure in cyclinder. This will tell you if you where off a tooth on belt. Check time with timing gun It should be 6 to 8 degree ATDC depending on A.C. or not . The old chain may have timing reset for slop so it would need to be reset for new chain.
Sounds like they didnt have the timing marks lined up correctly to me.
Inspect the wires make sure they are connected properly on both ends and the wire casings are not damaned, cracked or melted. If they were put on the wrong plugs that should trigger a ses light but worth checking. make sure all the vacuum lines are connected andnot cracked. with the vehicle running use a spray bottle and spray aroung the vacuum hoses for wear (cracking) and the bottom of the throttle body to see if the vehicle bogs down, if so you need a throttle body gasket. You just need to check a few things to check.
SOURCE: timing chain broke on my 96 cavalier 2.2 ohv.
If the chain broke while the engine was running, and I presume it did, it is possible that you may have damaged the valves. When the chain breaks the cam shaft stops moving and the valves stay in their last position. The pistons continue to move until the engine comes to a stop. An open valve can be hit by a piston, sometimes breaking the valve or just bending the shaft. Also you have to be sure the new chain has the cam shaft and crank shaft properly timed. As I understand that that engine does not have timing marks on the chain sprockets. To test for damaged valves, remove the spark plugs and test the compression in each cylinder by cranking the engine while holding the compression gage in the spark plug hole. All the cylinder should have the same pressure within about 15 psi. A cylinder with damaged valves will not have any compression pressure. If you are unsure about the valve timing check into how that engine is timed. I don't have that information but if is out of time it has a very major effect on the engine performance and idle. I hope this gives you a place to start looking for the cause of the mis. Good luck.
Thanks for using FixYa.

check all the ground cables and wires.make sure that the ground cable going to the engine is clean and tight.
SOURCE: Chevy Aveo 1.6 Engine, Timing Belt Broke, Replaced,Runs Rough?
Did you have the dealer change the belt because it broke ?
If this is the case they should know if it is an interfearance engine and if it is in fact an interference engine they should have checked the valves. If you had the belt changed just because you were scared it was going to break on you then I am sure the car ran fine when you took it in.
The explanation you gave sounds to me like they have the belt a tooth off and they need to re do it because the timing is out.
I hope this helps

Sam

You have a timing chain, don't have to change it like you do a belt.
