If it is not popping up at all, have someone "Thump" on the front of the hood with their hand while you pull the hood release cable. This will usually get it to pop up. Yes there is a secondary release. All hoods have secondary releases you can reach up under the hood to get to it once the hood has popped up from the first release.
Once you get the hood open, spray the latch mechanism with silicone lubricant to make it easier the next time.

SOURCE: hood release problem

Hi JP,

Unfortunately no. There are two things to try though.

If when you pull the release it feels as though the latch is releasing (without the hood rising), try pushing the hood down (relatching), giving it a sharp rap right above the latch or prying the hood up.

If when you pull the release nothing happens:
Get a flashlight and a long set of needlenose pliers.
Look through the front grill and locate the latch. You should be able to find the release cable. Grab it with the needle nose and pull it away from the latch. You'll hear it release.

Be patient, you'll get it.

SOURCE: 1998 astro van secondary hood latch will not release

it can be unbolted, but it sounds like your primary latch could be giving you problems. have some one play with the hood release (pushing and pulling) while you release secondary latch and pull up on hood. if you get it open spray all moving parts with wd40.

SOURCE: Broken hood release cable. How can I open the hood manually?

The cable is held in place by a metal bracket. If it cam off the bracket it won't work.

Look behind the part you pull and you will see the wire and the outer part of the cable. The end of the outer part of the cable has a groove neer the end. This groove slides onto a slot that is located just behind the pull latch. Once you see it it will make since on how it should go.

You can also grab the outer part of the cable and pull the inner wire. If you can pull the wire almost out, then it is broken. But the chances of that are very low.

SOURCE: Hood release is intact. However, hood will not

Yes there is, it's located just to the right of center of the hood(your left when facing front of car) feel around
for it, when you find it push up with your fingers. You may have to wiggle the hood up + down a little for it to all the way up. Hope this helps. Good luck

SOURCE: Good Morning, The hood release broke

there should be a rubber plug right under the front window on either side (the plug on the left can only be removed by removing the windshield wiper) once you have done this use a screw driver to push down on the latch under the hood

How do I open hood when cable or latch is broken

If the plastic hood release handle inside is broken, can you reach the steel cable, if so, use a pair of vice grips to grab the cable and pull. Sometimes it helps to have a helper standing at the end of the hood and pop the hood with palm of hand, in the area of under hood release mechanism, at the same time your pulling the cable.

If cable is broken, some makes and models, you can remove front grille and get at under hood release mechanism.

There is usually a primary hood release, inside vehicle, and a secondary release under the hood, you have to slide your hand under the hood to release, sometimes you have to press down on the hood a little to move release. Trying to shut the hood with secondary release engaged can be difficult, you don't have the distance and the weight of hood to swing down.

How do i open my hood from outside the cable is completley gone. It feels like my secondary latch is stuck .98 ram 1500 3.9magnum

Usually with secondary latch, you reach underhood to release.
If that doesn't work, you can try to remove front grille, see if you can reach the release, that way.

The hood on my 99 sunfire is closed shut and won't

The cable is probably broken and not connected to the latch. There are two latches, a primary which the cable is connected, and the secondary or safety.
You'll have to try to access the latch from under the car going up between the bumper and the radiator. You may need a body shop to do it.

Does any one know how to open the hood on a 1987 300e if the latch doesn't release

There is a release cable that is attatched to the red releas handle on the drivers under dash panel. You can grab that cable with needle nose pliers to release the hood to the first detent if the handle or cable is broken. There is a secondary release mechanism(called a hood tongue) which routes through the grille where the rectangular slot is once the hood is popped up with the release handle.you can grab the rest of the broken hood tongue with needle nose pliers and pull it out to completly release the hood from the saftey catch. If it is completely broken you can take a long screw driver and push the saftey catch( i beleive to the right) and the hood should be able to open all the way up. Both the hood tongue and the cable(securing portion at release handle) are common failures and break over the years.if it is at the release handle you are having a problem-get a #2 phillips screw driver and remove the release handle to gain access to the loose cable. I hope I have been helpful

Broken tab to hood release cable

Get a long screwdriver and try to release the secondary latch that way. Or if you have small hands reach up under the hood and pull the secondary latch toward the left.
