First gear drives fine but when it should shift to second its just coasts til you slow back to first gear speed. ax4n trans in a 1996 continental only gets 1st gear. shift solenoid 2 is stuck on before and after being replaced. when shifted from park to reverse, shift solenoid 2 & 3 are on, my info shows that to be wrong. the should all be off until you reach OD with the shifter.scanner says trans range sensor shows linkage is correct. scanner says 1st gear no matter what (probably because of the solenoid 2 on position), even in park. replaced all 3 shift solenoids, filter & all fluid. first gear drives fine but when it should shift to second its just coasts til you slow back to first gear speed. codes were stored for shift solenoid stuck before and now only tcc solenoid circuit error. solenoid 2 still on all the time and only getting 1st gear, park, reverse, and neutral.

How would that explain the shift solenoid 3 switching on when it should stay off in reverse

  • Anonymous Jan 06, 2011

But why would the #2 & #3 shift solenoids not function correctly?

If the solenoids are all new and the problem persists, I would look at what controls the solenoids. The Powertrain Control Module energizes the shift solenoids based on information it receives from various sensors, ie. speed sensor, throttle position sensor. Turn your attention to these items and away from what has already been repaired. The only other solution is, the transmission is bad.

This sounds exactly like the same problem I just fixed a day and a half ago in a Lincoln. The Torque Converter Clutch solenoid was causing this.l Or the TCC solenoid. I see that you do have the circuit code. I just replaced one.

VECHICLE NOT SHIFTING RIGHT COULD BE FAULTY TCM HAVING TOO MANY SHIFTING PROBLEMS.

  • Jonah Oneal Jan 07, 2011

TRANSMISSION SHIFT VALVES 1 2 3 ARE ON AT ALL TIMES. TRANSMISSION SHIFTS FROM FIRST GEAR THEN TO SECOND GEAR FROM SECOND TO THIRD GEAR WHICH OVERDRIVE TORQUE CONVERTER LOCK UP OCCUR THEN TRANSMISSION WILL DOWN SHIFT BACK DOWN TO FIRST GEAR.

  • Jonah Oneal Jan 07, 2011

REMOVE SOME OF TRANSMISSION FLUID ADD SOME TRANSMISSION ADDITIVES THAT WILL FREE UP STICKING SHIFT VALVES.I FORGOT MENTION FAULTY VECHICLE SPEED SENSOR WILL TRANSMISSION SHIFT PROBLEMS. IF TRANSMISSION VALVES DONT UNSTICK. YOUR BEST BET TAKE TRANSMISSION TO SHOP WORK ON TRANSMISSION. BECAUSE TRANSMISSION PARTS HIGH. THE SHOP CAN HOOK TRANSMISSION TO A SPECIAL SCANNER IN WHICH CAN SCAN ACTIVATES ALL SOLENOIDS IN VALVE BODY SEE WHICH ONE IS BAD.

Sounds like the trans could use a service, it might be too late to save it and will need a rebuild, but your description sounds like low pump pressure.

There is one at the input shaft and one at the output shaft. I could help if you gave me the code. This car has many transmission issues, you likely do have a slipping transmission, you don't fee it but the computer senses it through the turbine speed sensors.

Well a trans shop would need to look at it but I would suspect the valve body is having a problem. It is inside the trans so a shop needs to look at it anyway.

Where is the speed sensor located?

There are three transmissions available in different year Windstars.95-00 had an AX4S model, depending on engine,or possibly an AX4N model. From 01-03,the 4F50N,just a later version of the AX4N was introduced. There are many variations of speed sensors depending on the year model, and engine size, and trans that was equipped at the factory. They are all located on the transaxle. The AX4S has two speed sensors, one located above the final drive assembly, mounted atop the transaxle case,in between the back side of the engine block, and the firewall of the car body.Later versions of the AX4S also carried another speed sensor in the same area, but back closer to the bellhousing, and deleted the one i just described a few sentences back.,Both versions of the AX4S carry a second speed sensor in the channel plate, mounted externally,on the driver side, near the sidecover/pan.Now onto the AX4N trans. This trans also carries a speed sensor in the channel plate, and a second one locatated atop the trans case, behind the rear of the engine block,in between the engine and firewall. The 4F50N also uses the same speed sensor arrangement as the AX4N model.Good luck.
