I have a 2011 Subaru Outback, manual transmission with less than 600 miles on it. I noticed early on, when I first got the vehicle, that a cloud of smoke would exit the exhaust pipe when starting up the car. It is not a vapor as it did not evaporate like vapors typically do, but rather a obervably small white cloud. After the car starts up and runs a little bit, then the amount of smoke signficantly dissipates to nearly a visually undetectable level. Please advise as to what is causing this smoke upon start up of the automobile and is it a signal that there is a problem with the new vehicle?

First of all, is it still under warranty? It sounds like water or oil in the exhaust. could be several issues, are you losing any oil or water. And yes this is a signal that there is a problem. Take it back to the dealer. You should have at least a five year 60k mile powertrain warranty.

My odometer is 110,000 that a subaru 2008 outback is that bad,i bought only last week

  • Not to bad. Outback is a good vehicle. With so many miles and it only being a 2008 I am inclined to think this was a highway traveled vehicle more than in town. This is good because highway miles is far better on a vehicle than in town miles. Some maintenance you need to either confirm has been done or inspected to see if it needs to be done. May also have some warranty with it to but warranties often do not cover preventative maintenance.
  1. Transmission flush - 20,000 miles
  2. Transmission Filter - 50,000 miles
  3. Radiator flush. - 30,000 miles
  4. Air filter. - As needed.
  5. Oil change. - 3 months or 3,000 miles - usually right away with new vehicle.
  6. Emissions clean. - 25,000 miles
  7. Brake inspection. Right away with new vehicle.
  8. Serpentine belt - 50,000 miles inspect often.
  9. Alignment check - Check is often free.
  10. Tires.

My 2001 Subaru Outback doesn't show a transmission dipstick. The manual has a diagram but there's no dipstick there. It just started kicking between gears, 1. Where's the dipstick? 2. How many miles can I...

It just all depends on the fluid level. It probably needs changed around 50,000-60,000 miles. Sometimes, the dipstick is under the car. It is not an actual dipstick. It is much smaller but it is located on the side of the transmission. I would check down there to see if it is on the side.

When should I have transmission fluids flushed/replaced on my 2001 Subaru Outback Legacy? I have 89,000 miles, and have done all the other recommended maintenance steps.

Every vehicle mfg. has a recommended about of miles to do this. It should be in your owners manual.
Every tech has a different answer for this as well, but the mileage it has now is about the time to do it.
I would have a reliable auto center, flush, change filter and re-fill.
They have the special equipment to do it right.
Get a few estimates first.
You can expect to spend about $ 125- $175.00.
Please let me know how it goes.

2000 Subaru Outback Wagon (100K miles) with P0420 Code

I do not know for sure if this is the problem you are having, But, I have noticed that from 95 up to 2002 I have seen a lot of PO420 codes that have been just the sensor. I do not know if it was a weak sensor or just that program telling it that it is below threshold. I did notice that if the vehicles are run for a long trip at highway speed it goes out. I wish you luck and have a great day.
