Here is the fuse box diagram, but the Elantra appears to have a rather funky battery fuse! Most vehicles have a main battery fuse but it is on the battery connector wire. If you put in a new ECM, was it programmed to the vehicle?
Very Possible it is your fuse, the only thing that makes me think otherwise is that your problem is intermittent. When a fuse blows, things stop working they do not work intermittently. If you recently installed a stereo, check the harness for crossed connections or exposed wiring that may be causing a short. When you blow the fuse for the stereo it usually takes out many of the interior electronic accessories such as Interior dash lights, electronics door locks, dome lamps, etc. Check the fuse box likely under the dash, if not in a corner of the engine compartment under the hood and find the diagram for the fuse lay out. Check the fuse for the stereo or interior accessories or for the door locks. problem could be with the wiring for either.
Check the fuse. If its okay there may be another fuse behind the unit (inline fuse) more common if the radio was replaced with an after market unit. Also make sure the ground strap on the radio is connected to a solid metal part of the car.
something between your lights and accessories (a wire) were crossed and it burnt out the wire. check your wires again, go to a website for your vehicle and see if you can find a wire diagram of your vehicle.
trying to do the same on my 01. ready to change the bulb but can't find it anywhere. anyhow, here's how you do it:
remove the dash by taking out 2 screws behind the ashtray and 2 above the instrument cluster begin prying off the dash from the ashtray up, when you reach the heater vents stop. next take a flat head screwdriver and pry off the dash from the left side with the door open. work left to right till you reach the heater vents and it'll come right off. you don't necessarily have to unplug any of the electric connectors if you don't want to, but you;ll have to reach around the dash while working. all you need to do now is remove the heater control unit via the 4 screws around it, then unplug the electric harnesses from the back of it. make sure you remember which goes where. the bulbs are the 3 white (or is it 2 white and 1 grey) circles on the back of the control unit. just turn them with a flathead screwdriver and turn it over and give it a little bump to get 'em to fall out (or grab 'em with a needle nose pliers if necessary). anyhow, that's how it's done, question is, where do ya find the bulbs?
I HAVE A 2008 HYUNDAI ELANTRA. I HAD THIS PROBLEM WHEN I WANTED TO REPLACE MY FACTORY RADIO. I ENDED UP TAKING APART MOST OF MY DASH TRYING TO FIGURE IT OUT. AFTER ALL SAID AND DONE. I FOUND OUT THAT THE PIECE THAT GOES AROUND THE RADIO JUST SNAPS INTO PLACE. I USED A COUPLE OF FLAT HEAD SCREW DRIVERS TO PRY IT OFF. THAT IS IT. IT IS THAT EASY. THE WHOLE CAR JUST SNAPS TOGETHER. THE CAR IS CHEAPLY PUT TOGETHER.
