1998 dodge neon airconditioning belt adjustment?

I need to adjust my aircondtioning belt, for a16 valve 4 cylinder 2 door....I cant seem to able to adjust it cause I don`t see any component that adjusts?

  • myhochstatte Aug 02, 2008

I have a 1999 Dodge neon 2-door, 4 cylinder sosh that I just replaced the air conditioning belt on. The belt will squeal loudly at intervals when running the a/c while driving down the road, or stopped at a red light, but I can idle in park for several minutes and it won't make a sound. Tried adjusting the belt, and applied belt dressing with the same results.

This procedure involves correcting the tension on the power steering accessory and A/C compressor drive belt.

1. Loosen the power steering pump locking bolts A and B and pivot bolt C(Illustration 1 and 2 ) to allow adjustment of belt tension.
2. Using a 1/2" breaker bar, adjust belt tension by applying torque to the square hole "D" on the power steering pivot bracket. Adjust the tension as follows:

Belt tension with no belt replacement: A. Using the Belt Tension Gauge Special Tool Kit C-4162, adjust the belt tension to 100 lb.
B. Tighten in order, first tighten the locking bolt A to 27 Nm (20 ft. Ibs) then, bolt B to27Nm (20 ft. Ibs). Finally tighten the pivot bolt C to 54 Nm (40 ft. Ibs).
Belt tension with belt replacement:
A. Using the Belt Tension Gauge Special Tool Kit C-4162, adjust the belt tension to 135 lb.
B. Tighten in order, first tighten the locking bolt A to 27 Nm (20 ft. Ibs) then, bolt B to 27Nm (20 ft. Ibs). Finally tighten the pivot bolt C to 54 Nm (40 ft. Ibs).
C. Start the engine and allow the vehicle to idle for 15 minutes to allow the belt to seat.
D. Repeat the belt tensioning procedure, set belt tension to 135 lb.

Dont forget to unloosten the 15mm fulcrum bolt in addition to the two adjusting bolts or the bracket will not adjust.

Valve settings

- Pull the hand brake and put transmission in neutral.
- Remove spark plug cords.
- Remove the spark plugs.
- Remove the Tappet cover
- Lift up the left front wheel.
Cylinder number 1 is toward the pulleys and belts side.
- Rotate the crankshaft anticlockwise with socket and extension rod and bring the valve tappets (intake and exhaust) No. 4 cylinder on dancing position.
NOTE: THERE ARE OTHER WAYS ALSO TO ADJUST THE FOUR VALVES AT A TIME. BUT AS DIY FOLLOW THE FOLLOWING METHOD TO AVOID ANY CONFUSION.
- Adjust the valve clearance of number 1 cylinder.
Valve clearance:
Intake 0.18 - 0.22 (cold) Exhaust 0.25 - 0.28 (cold)
- Rotate the crankshaft anticlockwise to bring the valves of cylinder 2 on dancing position and adjust the valves of No. 3 cylinder.
- Similarly rotate the crankshaft to bring the valves of No. 1 cylinder on dancing position and adjust the valves of No. 4.
- Rotate the crankshaft anticlockwise to bring the valves of cylinder No. 3 on dancing position and adjust the valve clearance of No. 2 cylinder.

I have a 2004 Dodge NEON with an interference engine that the timing belt broke on. What are the chances of valve damage and about how much does that cost to fix?

The valves will be bent and you will need a head job done. The time to do the job outside head reconditioning would be around 4 hours labour and the parts will include valves, head gasket kit, timing belt, adjuster pulley, and if the job is done properly crankshaft and cam shaft seals as oil is the main cause of belt failure.

Was driving on freeway about 65 miles hr my 1998 dodge neon just shut down not hot no check engine light came on no nothing like i ran out of gas but it didnt gas pump working and its getn fuel the timing...

When the timing belt breaks the pistons still go up and down but unfortunately the valves are not getting out of the way of the pistons which results in bent valve stems. Replacing the belt without replacing the valves is only half a job and it will not start because there will be no compression in the cylinders.. You will have to pull the head and fix the valves first.

2005 dodge neon timimg belt broke did it bend the valves

maybe between two to four are bent . remove valve cover, timing belt upper to turn cam, pull # 1 plug rotate crank untill piston is at mid point all pistons will be at same spot and its safe to turn cam. rotate cam and ck valve height thy should all match if valve is bent height will be off in most causes bad ones you can clearly see, if you have a valve bent only on the seat in may be to height but not seal to test pull cam and leak test each cylinder.

My 1998 plymouth neon has a number 4 cylinder misfire. changed plugs, wires, coil pack. still misfires. does it at slow speeds and really bad when trying to get up to speed when entering the highway....

CHECK FUEL INJECTOR WIRING TO NUMBER 4 INJECTOR,HOOK A TEST LIGHT TO MAKE SURE IT BLINKS WHILE ENGINE RUNNING.THAT WAY YOU WILL KNOW IF PCM FIRING THE FUEL INJECTOR OR FAULT AT THE INJECTOR WIRING OR YOU HAVE INTAKE LEAK LOW COMPRESSION TO THAT CYLINDER BECAUSE OF BAD BURNED OUT VALVE.COMPRESSION TEST TO THAT CYLINDER CAN ALSO HELP.LOOK FOR LOOSE OR WORN DAMAGE ROCKER ARMS IF YOU HAVE A SOHC SINGLE OVER HEAD CAM ENGINE.

97 dodge neon wont start

Have you turned the engine over to see if all the timing marks line up. Did you check for spark on all cylinders? You said it's getting fuel, is that fuel pressure or injection pulse? What is the fuel pressure?
