Have a 1990 buick with 8oooo miles car wouldnt start replaced ecm ran a couple weeks check engine lite came on, trouble code low/high volts on tps. replaced tps now have low volts code and very high idle have tried to rotate tps but volts dropped to.4 engine requires .5 + - .005. idle rpm slows with rotation of tps, have also disconected battery trouble code still appears
when i rotated tps to get low idle even with 4.5 volts on my meter i got inside my 1990 buick and realized my check engine light was off. accessed trouble code and none came up locked her down and called her good. haven't had a problem yet. thanks for trying. skot when i rotated tps to get low idle even with 4.5 volts on my meter i got inside my 1990 buick and realized my check engine light was off. accessed trouble code and none came up locked her down and called her good. haven't had a problem yet. thanks for trying. skot

Well code 22 means the signal coming from the TPS is too low. That usually means an open circuit between the sensor and the engine computer. The computer sends a 5 volt signal to the sensor and reads what comes back to the computer. Its possible the sensor is way out of adjustment, but more likely a broken wire or connector between the sensor and computer. You would need a scanner to "see" the data stream from the sensor to know for sure.
The code indicates the TPS is still bad and the code is usually right, but it could be a wiring issue at the TPS connector or less likely a computer issue.
To test the TPS circuit, you need to check voltage and ground from the ECM - 5v is the normal reading between the ECM reference circuit and the ECM ground circuit at the TPS connector. Checking the TPS signal circuit to the ECM requires monitoring the TPS signal on a scan tool while jumping the 5v reference and the signal circuits. The TPS reading should go from high when the circuit is jumpered to low when the jumper is removed.
Trouble Code 22 indicates that the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) is reading abnormally low. TPS volts should be close to 0.42 V at closed throttle and rise smoothly in about 0.02 volt increments to a maximum reading of about 4.85 volts at WOT. Typical causes for this code include:
1) Maladjusted TPS 2) Defective TPS 3) No +5 volt reference to TPS 4) TPS-return to ECM is shorted to ground or to sensor ground 5) Defective ECM
It may be the throttle position sensor. You should have a check engine light on in your dash. You will need to have someone plug a OBD II reader in and retrieve the code.
You can spend a LOT of money just putting in one part after another.
Please let me know what you find.
The TPS must be set with a voltage meter. What are the code numbers? Air flow meter will not let it idle too. Get a used one to save you money. Be sure you do not have the ecm number 1228253 in it also, they will make the car shut off while driving. I have one of the cars with 295,000 miles on it.
If both the MAF and 02 have been replaced, try the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) also check for vacuum leaks. the hoses that come out of the throttle body are very vulnerable to melt from heat.
CODE 12
Trouble Code 12 is a special case code that is not logged into the ECM's Non-Volatile Memory (NVM) when detected. When the ignition is "ON" and the ECM detects no ignition reference pulses coming from the ignition module, it illuminates the Service Engine Soon lamp. CODE 22
Trouble Code 22 indicates that the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) is reading abnormally low. TPS volts should be close to 0.42 V at closed throttle and rise smoothly in about 0.02 volt increments to a maximum reading of about 4.85 volts at WOT CODE 35
Trouble Code 35 is not used in the Turbo cars. If this code appears while a computer is connected to the ALDL connector, it is probably the result of a bad cable connection at the PC or the ALDL connector. Reseat the cable connections.
