I have a 1989 Jeep Cherokee Pioneer with 242k miles on it. In line 6, 5 speed manual, 4 wheel drive. I am having trouble with it starting the first time. When it does start it will idle high for about ten seconds. While going down the road the engine will die, being a standard though it cranks itself. I thought at first that my transmission was going out then it dawned on me what it was. I believe it is a vacuum problem but not sure.

Mine also will quit going down the road, and idles high at times, or idles low, like having a mine of it's own. possibly idle air speed solenoid (which i replaced on mine) and still does this. another tech said only factory solenoid will "talk" to ecm properly?

How to fix 1999 jeep cherokee sport

You mean it cranks but does not start, right ?
The NoBus on the display means the cluster is not talking to the computer. That could be a wiring problem or a component problem.
Have you checked the engine computer for trouble codes ?

How can i use the 4 x 4 in my 2000 grand cherokee laredo (6 cyl) i dont have the owners manual and i dont know how to use my 4x4 on snow or something like that

With the Jeep in park, move the left shifter to 4 wheel drive. Proceed to put right shifter into drive, proceed to drive. Only use 4wheel drive when neccessary...ie...snow, mud, use 4 wheel lo in steep incline or when really bogged down.

Hope this helps

What is an AIS Motor. I have a 1989 Jeep Cherokee 4 wheel drive., straight 6 engine. Also what is a PCM Computer

I have never heard of an AIS motor on a jeep or any other vehicle for that matter. A PCM is the computer that runs the cars Electronics. Without the PCM the car doesn't run.

4 wheel drive not engaging

I do not have a vacuum diagram for the 89 Cherokee, but my 89 had the same issue several times and all it was is that the block of vacuum lines that go into the front axle on the rear of the axle on the passenger side of the vehicle. I ended up having to put a zip tie around the axle and hose block to hold it on. Have not had the issue again since doing this. Hope that helps.

Changing my 1989 from 4 wheel drive to 2 wheel drive and Anti-Locking Braking System

An ABS system will have wheel sensors installed. Remove one of your wheels and look for a wiring harness that runs to your steering knuckle(the part that you brake rotor and strut is attached to. Also, either you front half shaft or brake rotor will have what looks like gear teeth on them. These are the magnets the sensor reads. If your Jeep has either of these it has an ABS system. Secondly the chassis on the Cherokees should be the same irregardless of trim level (limited vs regular). These trim levels affect the interior trim and power extras only not the mechanical parts.
