This is a common problem when one of your emissions components has failed. Most often, it is the oxygen sensor.

Take your car to the local parts retailer (mine happens to be Advance Auto Parts). They usually will pull the code from the PCM for free and tell you which part has failed. If you get multiple failures, you may only need to replace one part since a single sensor out of whack can cause other sensors to go out of range as the PCM tries to compensate.

SOURCE: mercury sable starting problem

You need to take off the distributor cap and it is a little plastic coated black box thing that is sorta half moon shaped and wraped around the center shaft of the distributer. Before replacing it take a hair dryer/blower and heat the little black box up to very warm. Replace the distributer cap as quickly as you can and then run and try to start the engine. If it sputters or even starts then that is the culprit. it may even keep running but it will happen again and again so you need a new one before you get stranded some place. I bought mine at a wrecking yard and you do have to buy the hole distributar. They won't sell you just the modualator. It should only cost you 30 to 50 bucks. If they want more then that then lkeep shopping. Mine cost 50 at the one place but they wanted 80. I told them pick a part wanted thirty and I would offer them fifty or wait. They took the 50. If you want a good laugh then call the dealership fo a new one. be sure you are laying down when you call.
You might find one on ebay too but again they are higher most of the time and you have to take your chances and wait for the thing to be shipped. Even if it doesn't sputter or start then it still may be the problem. They can completely go out but heating them sometimes gives them a boost. It is one of the biggest rip offs the auto industery ever came up with to replace a set of 7 dollar points. Let me know how it turns out. I hope I helped you some what, The Raz

Why is my 1996 mercury sable not starting?

Can be out of gas, blown fuel pump fuse or injector link, defective fuel pump relay, broken wire, or of course defective fuel pump. Or a number of other defective relays or switches. Or possibly the problem is in the electronics, NO spark to the plugs. First check for spark, then test fuel pressure at the engine intake area.

Car will turn over but wont crank what could be wrong

If the motor turns over with the starter,
then the motor is said to be cranking

You have two situations only

You have a no crank or a no start

The rest is slang & nonsense everyone uses

Check for Spark
Check for Injector Pulse
Check for Fuel Pressure
Check the Battery
Check for Compression

It just stopped in an intersection. Hasn't started since. She has good cranking but wont turn over

Someone will have to figure out if you are dealing with a no spark or no fuel problem to proceed.
Check for spark at the plugs and for fuel pressure at the injectors.

1992 mercury sable will turn over but wont start

Make sure battery has a full charge. If it cranks good but won't start, check the basics. Have a helper crank it while you visually check for spark at the spark plugs, if spark everywhere, use a gage and check proper fuel pressure. I looked at info for the 3.8L engine, 35--40 psi. Also, after you build fuel pressure, turn off the key, see if fuel pressure holds for a bit? If the pressure drops like a rock, check for fuel pressure leak. Check the vac line for fuel pressure regulator, if it has gas in it, the regulator is faulty, or a leaking fuel injector. The pressure could also drain back through fuel pump.
Also, check fuel injector pulse, engine cranking. Any applicable trouble codes?
Smell of the crankcase oil dipstick, if it smells like gas, either you don't change oil and filter very often or the engine is running very rich for some reason.

My car is cutting off every time im going under 1000rpm. mercury sable 2002. codes were p0301 p0302 and p0316 until i changed crank sensor and spark plugs now it says p0316 p0305 p0306.. whats going on?...

Hi

P0305 is misfire in cylinder #5.
P0306 is misfire in cylinder#6.
P0316 is misfire on start up.
Have the plugs on those 2 cylinders, and the 2 fuel injectors checked, also check for spark from the coil on those 2 plug wires.

Please get back to us if you have further query or else please accept the solution.
