It sounds like the crankshaft postioning sensor. my 940 was doing the same thing, and after replacing the sensor the problem was fixed..try this, pull up on the cable of the sensor gently then try and see if it restarts..but if it does, replace the sensor.

Fuel injection relay. It is located under the hood inside the fuse box. It is either red or green in color. It is one of the larger relays. This is classic symptom of these things going bad. The heat causes the relay to swell and not engage properly. They die out every couple of years. Usually the car will start again after it cools down.

Volvo 850gls 1994 starts and turns over normally but won't stay running, will start when car cools down

Hello and welcome to FixYa!

Looks like that the ignition coil is faulty. When the ignition coil is faulty the car tends to stall when engine is warmed up. I strongly suggest that you replace the ignition coil to resolve the problem. Not a big deal, it's common on all vehicle.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

1996 volvo 850 powered down, all panel lights came on, car died, generator not charging light had been on for a month (looks like a battery), what could be problem, is it expensive,

when the generator quits the car will run until the battery is drained then it will stop. You need the constant recharging to keep running. Sounds like you will need an alternator. Seek a volvo shop and get estimates.

I would check that the auxilliary drive belt that runs the alternator and probably the water pump hasn't just broken, causing the engine to overheat and the battery to run flat. Just a suggestion, hope it helps.

Starting Problem

Look on the distributor. There is a module on it that, when too hot, will cause miss/stall/no re-start situations.
