Hi, I have a 1998 toyota avalon xls. The vechile has 136,000 miles on it. I've recently had a new timing belt, water pump, mass air flow, and fuel air sensor replaced. My check engine light just came back on the day after I picked it up from the shop. I've noticed at 45-55 mph my car hesitates almost like it's losing power briefly (pumping along). Any ideas as to what the real issue is here?

Almost certainly one or more of the drive belts (not the timing belt) on the engine needs an increase in tension. It may tell you about this in the owner's handbook.
If not you can either ask a mechanic to do this straightforward job for you, or try it yourself. You can download a zipped service manual from here
DUE TO THE AGE OF CAR, TIMING BELT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO REPLACE WATER PUMP, BUT IT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA..GAS AND OIL HAVE NO EFFECT ON TIMING BELT OR WATER PUMP.....
I just had the same problem with my 2001 avalon. AutoZone told me it was code Po171 and the car was running lean. You don't have to take it to the shop right away but don't wait too long. Took it and the mechanic had to clear out the mass air flow on top of the air bonx (sp?). I guess if this vent gets clogged it can strain the engine? Hope this helps!

This is a expensive repair but if you just unplug the the air inlet servo motor(behind the glove box )
the air should start to work but without fresh/recirc control.
more than likely your mass air flow sensor is bad. it is located. on the air fliter box to the right of the box lid. cost about $200.00 at the dealership. go to autozone or advance and you can the same thing this one is a refurbished one for half to cost. un plug sensor. un screw two phillips screws, pull it out and put the new one in. thats it. good luck
