Gas tank

When you say it only leaks when you fill it up - do you mean WHILE you are at the pump, adding fuel to the tank , or WHEN the tank is full??
If it happens during refueling, the filler neck may have rusted allowing some fuel passing thru it en route to the tank to leak out. The filler neck can be replaced - and may even be subject of a recall. Contact you dealer to make sure it hasn't been recalled for these types of problems before spending *your* money to fix a manufacturer's defect.
Many times, this indicates a tank that has a hole near the top of the tank - which is much better than one at the bottom. There are products - and professionals - that can repair (or replace) these problems / parts. Locating and accessing the hole can be another story however.
Removing the tank for repair / replacement can cause you to incur additional expenses to replace fuel senders, etc. that seem to be fragile enough to break during removal.

Fuel guage went from full to empty, and check engine light came on. Runs great!

This is a common problem with 2006 Chevrolet Cobalts. The gas tank needs to be removed and the sending unit replaced. Thanks for using Fixya.

Strong fuel smell around vehicle jacked vehicle

I have the exact same problem with my 2006 chevy cobalt right now. That's why I am searching this. I had a mechanic friend look at it and it's the fuel pump and the lines are cracked to. Has anyone heard of a recall on this? It can't be a coincidence that we are having the same issue.

My 2007 cobalt has a slight fuel leak, there is a gasoline odor in the cab, and the mpg is way down -- I filled up and am now on 3/4 of a tank after 30 miles of driving -- The car has around 60,000 miles....

i have a shop and we have had several cobalts come in with a fuel leak. the lines from the fuel pump assembly on the top of the gas tank is platsic and has either been cracked and broken. it sucks cause there haven't been any afetrmarket set ups to replace it and we had to order a new pump assembly from the dealer. hope this helps

2006 chevy cobalt gas smell problem. There was or is a recall for this model car, but the vin. # is not in the specified perameters. It's the same exact problem as described in the recall letter. What can...

You need to have this looked at. One possibility is someone is topping the tank. Have seen where some people will try to squeeze as much gas as they can and fill up the vapor recovery system, pump until it clicks off. Don't try getting any more in.

The recall may still apply to your car even if the vin does not match, if the problem matches GM needs to step up to it. Sometimes there are unspoken recalls. The car maker knows there is a problem but only deals with it as the problem is brought in or may deal with it as a warranty repair. Is your car under the 3 year 36k factory warranty yet?

Leaking fuel or strong gas smell

i had a fuel odor in my cobalt and after lowering the fuel tank i found one of the fuel lines coming out of the tank was cracked, while removing the fuel pump both of them snapped right off. way too brittle but a new pump and sending unit (all one assembily) fixed it right up with minimal difficulty and only $250.00.
hope this helps
