The light GEN. comes on .i dont know what that means.

Generator and Alternator basically do the same thing...and thats charge the battery.
If ya have a GEN light...I'd have the generator / alternator checked at your local parts shop.

Hope this helps...

Does a 1996 jeep have a generator and an alternator? The light came on as GEN.

usually the generator and alternator are in the same device, older vehicles may have the alternator circuit seperately installed somwhere else.

The Gen lamp indicates that the battery is no longer getting a charge. or there will be a red battery sign lamp.

at this time of year on older vehicles it maybe that your battery needs replacement.
it is better to get a garage to check your battery status, as you dont want to find out that you need a new battery after buying an new alternator then you end up buying both.

I hope this was useful.

Voltage should be more than 14--closer to 14.5. Alternator is starting to pack up. Recommend you replace--good insurance. Let me know if you need instructions.

Warning light on dashboard

have your charging system and battery tested. GEN stands for generator which you really don't have, you have an alternator...engineers are too busy changing stuff we don't need to change GEN to ALT!!!!
Good luck!!!

Gen light came on dashboard

check the conector and power wire on alt are tight
also check supply wire from alt has continuity as it might have a fusable link but it is likely the alternator is cooked
take it to alt shop there in the yellows and they will likely have a removal service for a few extra dollars but they are the people who re build them and can test them properly

Generator light on 1996 jeep cherokee. what does

First clean the battery terminals & their connection to the battery. Check to see if the alternator belt is tight. Once started, connect an amp. meter to thebattery terminals. Black to black, red to red. If the reading is over 13.2, alternator is charging. If it is not, change the alternator. If it is over 13.2, you may need a new battery. Have a load test done at any reputable automotive store. Hope this helps & if it does please do the right thing & recommend this advice. Thanks

IT WOULDN'T GO OVER 20 THEN IT PICKED UP TO 50. THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON KNOW IT'S OFF BUT THE LIGHTS AND INTERIOR LIGHTS WERE FLASHING OFF AND ON. THE CAR WON'T START NOW, I CAN JUMP IT BUT IT WON'T HOLD...

I had the same problem with my 96 grand cherokee limited a while back, when the mechanic checked it out he said it was a sensor. He changed the sensor then it worked fine for about a couple of days until it happened again.
Then the mechanic checked it out again and saw that the alternator was not longer working properly. He said that the battery is what holds the power to start the car and somehow charge the alternator which later charges the battery back, this happens back and forth. Long story short, got the alternator fixed and have had no problem with the car since december.
