I removed my spark plug wires and forgot which wire goes with which plug for a 1998 toyota camry.

possibly what is called a misfire, could be plug, bad wire, fuel injector, or oil or water getting to plug. majority of time it is bad wires and/or plug

well there are two options., your valve cover grbomets for spark plug tubes are bad,specificly #1 or spark plug tube has to be remove and reseal, while doing this if not have acces to an special removal tool you need to remove valve cover, take this has an oportunity to replace valve cover gasket and all gromets(spark plug tube 4, and vlebe 8 small that look like a washers on each bolt) the tubes are treat in remove with locking plyers clean treaths on a wire wheel apply black silicone and reinstall.

could be bad spark plugs or wires that would be an easy start for you...would start with good tune up...Hope that helps you,,

Run your vehicle with the hood open at night in a dark place with the headlights off. Look at the spark plug wires to see if spark is jumping out onto your chassis. If you have the long tubular boots, remove the one going to #4 cylinder and see if spark jumps to chassis through the side wall of boot. If so, replace the wire. It also could be the #4 post on your distributor. It's part of the cap assembly and they are usually pretty cheap to replace. Replace rotor button when replacing cap. The rotor button is usually less than 5 bucks.

Remove the wire from the plug and look inside the Boot, there should be some metal prongs that clamp onto the plug, check to see if they are set right, so that when you install the boot on the Spark Plug they will clamp and stay on the plug. If you're not sure what it should look like, pull off the boot on the plug next to the one you are working on and compare the two. You can use a long flat bladed screwdriver to bend the prongs, make sure you're Engine and Ignition are off when you do this.

Start with a cool/cold engine.

Four cylinder: Remove spark plug wire boots (four in a row on top of the engine). DO NOT PULL ON THE WIRE only the rubber top. Make sure the wires are numbered, if not, number them. They MUST go back to the same hole they came out of after the new plugs are installed. Remove the spark plugs with a 16mm spark plug wrench. Install new plugs (any auto parts store can tell you what your options are here): Start threading the new plugs by hand so you don't cross thread the engine head by accident. Then complete tightening them gently. Spark plugs are supposed to be tightened to a specific torque: 13ftlbs in this case. If you choose to not use a torque wrench do not overtighten the plugs. Reinstall boots securely.

6-Cylinder: Remove engine cover, if present. Disconnect the six connectors on each of the ignition coils. Remove each of the six ignition coil bolts and then remove the coils by pulling straight up -- arrange them so that you know which goes back where. Remove and install the six plugs as described above. Reinstall the ignition coils with their bolts (torque: 69 in-lbs), then wires. Replace the cover.

There's a special tool designed for removing the plug-wires. You could get one for less than $10 at a good autoparts store. You could also try this option:

Drive the car a couple miles to let the engine warms up. Then put a piece of rag on top of the plug wire concerned, so it won't damage the end of it (and for a good grip).
Grap the top of the plug-wire firmly. Then turn/twist sideways, and lift out the plug-wire. Repeat this until you get it done.

If you couldn't remove the plug-wires without damaging them, you may have no choice but to tear them off with the plier, and buy yourself new plug-wires. Ask the autoparts clerk to show you some special adhesive to apply to the new plug-wires, so they won't get stuck again.

You aer not clear about your problem, when replacing plugs and wires all the boots need to stay in place, the larger boot goes around the spark plug, making sure the metal is secure around the tip of the plug, the oppisite end fits the distributer cap, making sure the metal at the end of the wire is securely in the hole. You said you have 3 boots, you should boots for each end of each plug wire and a plug wire for each spark plug
