More than likely you have not fully compressed the caliper piston into the caliper. Take the old inner brake pad and clip it on back onto the piston. With a large clamp (one side on the back of the caliper behind the piston and the other on the face of the old brake pad) and compress the piton slowly by tightening the clamp. It needs to bottom out completely. Remove the clamp and old brake pad and install the new pads. Make sure that when you install the caliper to the rotor that the brake pads stay locked in position and it will slide over the rotors and fit snug.

Testimonial: "Thanks, this answer was dead on. I actually solved the problem myself after I posted this question by depressing the piston completely. It was barely stick up but obviously it needed to be completely seated. After I completely depressed it I was finally able to get the brakes on the rotor. Great call."

Does a 1997 Gmc jimmy have back bums or pads

You mean drums? Depends on the vehicle options but should be rotors/pads. Easy to check - look through the wheel spokes and if pads, you should see the rotor.

I bled the brakes after replacing a broken line and the brakes are still soft when started. im sure the air is out of the lines. what else could i check

If you replaced the line without replacing the rotor and pads this thing leaked fluid on it will never work right. Once brake fluid leakes unto pads an rotors they are useless.
Furthermore, if the brake hoses are worn they should be replaced.
Lastly recheck the fittings of the line you replaced . make sure you didn't cross thread the fittings and the connection is tight.

I cant figure out how to get the rotor off my 89 gmc jimmy

Use air hammer or regular one if nessecary and hit the rotor between the wheel studs. It will pop loose eventually. DO NOT HIT THE ROTOR WHERE THE BRAKE PADS RIDE, or the studs for that matter.

Brakes on 200 GMC jimmy

get a bleed kit or make up some with clear plastic tubing fitted to each bleed nipple
run tubing into a clear dispoable container for each with enough fluid in them so as not to allow air back up the tubing! 2inches deap should do it so long as the tube cant move out of the fluid!
then you can open all four nipples & slowly pump the pedal & dont lat the master cylinder get too low on fluid! [dont pump hard or fast as it creates bubbles]
when no air is left in the system [no bubbles in jars or tubing then close all nipplse!
allow a couple of minutes for the rubbers to settle to original shape then you should have pressure at the paedal!
