First, this isn't a motorcycle, so I had to re-categorize the question.
Motor oil is determined by engine, not vehicle. The correct oil may be listed on the underside of your hood. Most newer non-diesel engines request 5W30 or 5W40 especially if you live in a part of the world that is below freezing multiple days in the winter. If you have a higher mileage engine (100,000+) you may want to go with 10W30 or 10W40 in the summer, as this will quiet the engine.
Due to tight tolerances on Japanese engines the factory most likely recommends 5W30 I on the other hand recommend : If the engine has less than 50,000 miles 10W30. If it has over 50,000 miles on it and isn't burning oil (black smoke) i use 10W40. If it's over 150,000 and is a little sloppy ( burns a little oil) I use 10W40 in the winter and 20W50 in the summer.
Any engine can use synthetic oil. I would reccomend using a popular brand like castrol syntec that you can find anywhere. Also you need to make sure that you never go back to using regular oil. It's synthetic or nothing!
A stock 2000 Maxima engine is non-turbo and 5W30 oil is recommended by nissan. As the mileage on the engine increases, you should switch to a heavier weight oil, like 10W40.
You can use either a full synthetic blend oil 5W30 or 5W40, and even a semi synthetic blend oil 10W40.
If you have the last invoice for service , it should state which grade of oil was used, or you can check under the bonnet to see if they put a service sticker or tag , showing which oil they used.
Hope this helps
There's no tappets adjustment needed for this engine as they are hydraulic lifters. Try using 10w40 instead and see what happens or otherwise try using Moreys oil treatment with your current oil as it seems to me that the noise is more at startup and for a short period. Cheers.
