Its your fuel pressure regulator. pain in the rear to change. its the small brass looking thing next to the throttle with a vacuum line going to it . the part cost me 50$ and i paid a guy $ 75 to put it in. worth every penny. looks easy to change yourself, but not as easy as it looks.

I have a 2004 impala with the same symptoms. I am going to have the regulator changed. If it works I will report back.

There was a recall GM Recall#06160 regarding the fuel or fuel vapor. Call a dealership, give them the recall # and VIN and they should fix it for free. I'm trying it out today on my 2004 impala.

We also own a 2005 chevrolet impala with strong gas fumes, inside of the car driving or just idling..also fumes are strong when the car is just idlin. Took it to the mechanic and put the car on the rack,...

I would have someone check under the front of car while engine was running. Maybe then a gas leak could be spotted. Did he check the charcoal canister-it's a gas vapor collector from the gas tank, and maybe located at front of car. If the canister is full and not working to purge the canister and send the collected fuel and vapors into the engine, it might be what you are smelling.

Car smells like gas and has trouble starting

This sounds like your evaporative emissions system acting up. Has the check engine light come on? There should be a charcoal cannister that filters the vented air/fumes from the fuel tank. If a vacuum or vapor line is broken, or removed.. or if the charcoal canister is depleted, you'll get the gas smell.

Smell of gas and whistling sound

Its all connected.
The computer uses a solenoid to vent the fumes from the tank when the engine is running.
The vapor canister holds the fumes until the vent valve is opened.
The computer tried to vent the tank and something went wrong.
It could be from the excessive heat or something with the venting system.
A mechanic would test the venting system.

The smell i'm having is not the raw gas smell , it smells exhaust fumes getting in the car. i checked for exhaust leaks buut had none

if inded the smell of exhaust is getting into your car i would suggest not driving it until it is properly checked by a licensed meachanic. it could be entering through your heater/AC blower and in return be fatal if left untouched for a period of time
