If it does it mostly when you are backing up and turning sharp, it could be your ball joints!

I have a 96 GMC jimmy that's 4 wheel drive all

Hi Mitchel

Have your Cv joints checked could be seized and as it drives they gog in and out as you drive over road ways could be very dry of lubricant water got into the boot of one of them you will need to lift on hoist and spin each wheel and see if CV joints and shafts turn true with out the wobble up and down replacing them is best way to go if thats the problem they have recondition cv joints not too expensive way to go

When turning steering wheel - either way, clunking sound.

Sounds like you have a bad CV joint, this will make a clunking or clicking noise like you described only when turning, and varies with vehicle speed.

Have it repaired before it breaks and leaves you stranded, or damages anything else.

4 wheel drive stopped working

the light is on.........let's see, where you having problems with clunking noises in the front, now or before when or not in 4 wheel drive? If so sounds like cv/axle shats/joints. Last time you used 4 wheel, was there a big clunk, just once? Is there an ocasional clunk when going over bumps? If so, sounds like Ujoint. I don't belive chevys use vaccum for 4 wheel drives systems at all.
