My 1997 Dodge Caravan 3.0L makes a lot of noise in the front end while driving on rough roads. My guess is that the struts are "shot". Also, the front shock-struts feel kind of "sticky" when releasing the brakes. Is the Caravan safe to drive with all that racket going on? Can I keep driving it for an indefinite period of time even with the bad stuts? Thanks, Dave
You can drive on those struts untill it has no sping, and even then it is just dangerous because of bad handling. If it is you struts, then your car should bounce up and down if you tap the brakes, because the gas seal is leaking.
Struts are very easy to replace. The only special tool is a spring compressor, but it is easy to use, and you may be able to borrow one at an auto parts store like the AutoZone. Just a couple bolts at the top and bottom, and it comes right out. They cost less than $100.
If it doesn't bounce...it could be your half-shaft. Does it click when you make a turn backing up?
Testimonial: "Thanks Captain, I'm worried now that the noise is not coming from the struts because the car does not bounce. What is a Half Shaft? "
A half-shaft is the alternate to the axle. Many cars have a shaft that turns the wheel from a hub in the tranny. This is what gives you power to the wheels. They have two CV joints(constant velocity) that allow for the steering to happen while it turns the wheel. The rubber protective boot that holds the grease is what gives out in a half-shaft. Your two-wheel drive will have two half-shafts. It is easier to replace the shaft than to repair the CJ joint boot. A new shaft is around $100, and is not difficult to replace for a home mechanic.
Hope I can help.
Try and lift the front wheels, and move them back and forth by hand. Look for any play in the steering tie rod, or the control arms...basically look or feel for any extra play in the joints. If something is loose on one side and not the other, we will know for sure. Everthing should be snug, and you should not get any clicking sounds when you do this.
