first ther is no fan belt on that car, it could be a pulley like the flying pulley or tensionner

A timing belt usually makes a loud squealing noise (like a 'shriek/scream') when it is worn or slipping, not a grinding noise.

A quick check - before you start the car - is to pour some water onto the inside of the belt where it goes around the pulleys. If there's no noise at start up, you know it is the belt at fault (or the metal pulley/s are worn).

If the noise happens before the car moves - it obviously can't be your brakes. When backing up the noise may appear louder simply because your head is turned ..

If the noise is actually coming from a wheel, it possibly could be the backing plate on the brakes - the thin disk behind the brake may be rubbing on the rotor.

However.. a grinding noise ... if it is coming from the front of the engine in the general area of the timing belt be very wary - if a bearing or the belt fails, your engine will be history.

Why not give a mobile mechanic a call? Those guys are usually quite good and a lot cheaper than a workshop

If the timing belt goes out the whole engine will freeze up and blow it if its making a clicking sound but only when you turn then that means that the cv shafts are bad and need to be replaced

a/c compressor may be seized. A/c compressor kicks on when in defrost, a/c, floor/defrost modes any time temperature is above 40 degrees F. That will burn the sepenine belt and stall the engine.
Try turing heat on floor mode only & see if ok.

You may have to do some testing...if it is coming from the belts, start disconnecting them, don't drive the car since you will loose the power steering, but see if the noise still exists. Then if it does, is it coming from around the timing belt area, which brings me to my next question, has the timing belt been changed? Even if it isn't the area of noise; it needs to be done, and the water pump has to be replaced at the same time...location of the grinding noise is important in order to diagnose properly.

Hello, there are a couple of possible causes, it could be the water pump going out, it is driven from the timing belt, it may be a timing belt idler pulley or a worn drive belt tensioner
