My Bmw e-36 sunroof doesnt open it makes a load clicking sound, we have changed the motor in the sunroof but still doesnt work

take the cover off and insert a screwdriver / or allen key into the leaver, its the round part to open the sunroof manually., if its hard to more or dose not move then the sunroof is either off its track or seized up, if that's the case unbolt the motor and remove. have someone push on the sunroof with flat hands and push to the back and at the same time turn the cog with something to get a good grip on a tooth and slowly move the cog as pushing at the same time. it will take sum time but be careful as you don't want to damage the cog.

To manually closed you remove the panel that houses the sunroof button and you'll see the motor which has a hex hole in the center that you can turn clockwise direction with a hex socket, to close it.

If there is a separate switch for the tilt I would start with that.

It might be the sunroof switch that needs resetting,
Press open and keep button pressed till you hear a clicking sound, then press close and keep button pressed till you hear clicking sound that should have reset the switch.

I'm not familiar with this particular model but it sounds like you ran the motor past the track limits. You will have to take it apart again and reset the motor onto the track, as well as reestablish the track limits for raising and lowering the sunroof. I'm not sure how familiar you are with doing this kind of work, but you would do well to get a factory shop manual in order to do it correctly.
It's not a particularly brilliant system. When you hit the switch, the motor will keep running until it hits the contact on the track that cuts the power. If it doesn't, or the contact is in the wrong place, it will run off the track and then just spin. This true for both directions. Did you notice either of these when you replaced the motor? The shop manual should be able to tell you how to set them correctly.

If it is not moving but the motor is running then the gears are stripped or the cable is broken . Have it fixed and if you still hate the car then sell it ( you will get more money if the roof works properly)

Check the sunroof motor track see if there is an instruction or maby something is off track

Sounds like sunroof is stuck, motor can't overcome load. Cheap test: car off, interior light turned on try to move sunroof, does light dim? If yes motor is trying to move but can't. If light does not dim then motor not getting power.

There is no way or closing it manually sorry unless you have various BMW tools. The problem sounds like the electric motor went out on it. Its located right above where all your interior lights are. Pop the cover of for the lights and try tapping on the motor while your trying to close it with a small hammer lightly to see if you can get it close. Another thing that happens alot on the E 36 is that the plastic aliging pins on the rails will brake over time with use and than this will cause the sun roof to get stuck open or partially close. This will be the case if you ever heard a loud snap.
