you never have to drain it but never let it run dry the loud squealing sound is prob your belt which may need the idler pulley replaced , this is my quess
replace the power steering drive belt
indicates a hard belt that slips when wet
have the power steering pressures check by an accredited power steering specialist shop
Sounds like the power steering pump. Usually water pump will leak from its weep hole if its going out. Look for coolant leakage around bottom of water pump.
check your power steering fluid and pump, also these units have a problem with the rack and pinion unit, but start at the power steering fluid resovior and look for leaks, low fluid will cause the pump to starve for fluid cause irrepairable damage and noise as well... please rate my help, thanks
The power steering pump is normally connected or driven by the engine with a V-belt. A loose belt can cause squealing as soon as the power steering come under load (e.g. steering left or right while stopped).
Check the tension on the V-belt directly connected to the power steering pump. This may need replacement.
If there is fluid in the pump and it makes noise, that may indicate that the pump is going bad. Some PS pumps just make noise. Ford pumps, for example make a lot of noise, and there is nothing wrong with them. If it's a squeal, it might mean the bearings in the pump are going bad.
