Loose connections and starter relay in power distribution box under hood. Make sure you dont have a loose or poor connection on a ground or power wire from battery.

OK, I'd say you have a short, and a big one at that. Can you troubleshoot circuits? If yes, start at the engine compartment relay box and start checking fuses and any fusible links or circuit breakers in there.

Please see my tip at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r5925550-dead_battery_troubleshooting . These are generic instructions. If you get stuck or need specific instructions for your car, please get back to me with model, year and engine info.

If you find a bad circuit, I can pull your wiring diagrams and tell you where to look for the short. Please remind me what the z71 means--this is a Sierra, right? Do you have dual batteries?

Could be a starter sticking but that would cause more of a grinding noise, my best guess is that your flex-plate(flywheel) is broken if the noise is coming from between the engine and transmission. Remove the access cover for the bell housing and take a look at the flex-plate.

does the starter make a "clicking noise" when it wont turn over? check your battery cables at the battery and at the starter solenoid....if it not a connection , then it sounds like a bad starter relay/solenoid
