Three brake lights went out. Replaced little bulb and it works

Hello, all three of my brake lights went out. I replaced the little bulb in the rear window and it works. I replaced the other two main bulbs and they don't work. I have checked fuses under dash. What else could it be?

Hi from uk if all bulbs ok? and ou have checked fuse then the problem is most probably the brake light switch that is stuck in the off position ie the plunger which is supposed to come out and put light on being plastic they do sometimes stick the switch is just above the brake pedal and has a 2xpin plug attached if you unplug and connect the 2 terminals using a wire or paperclip ? then have an assistant check if lights work? if yes then check to see if the plunger on switch is failing to come out when you press pedal ? if yes ? then switch is faulty but if plunger is stuck use wd 40 and work the plunger by twisting and pressing in/out to free it ? then recon the plug and try lights ? if switch is faulty ? easy diy to replace it simply screws out from pedal box assy ten fit new switch and adjust by screwing so lights are off with pedal off and on as pedal is pressed approx 1/2 " to operate lights to on ! this is simply trial/error untill you are happy ? hope this helps best wishes from n/west uk

Check Brake Light Bulbs: All cars have three brake light bulbs that create the brake light illumination affect. If all of these brake light bulbs fail no brake light operation will occur. I know what you're thinking, you might say all three brake lights at once? But in reality one brake light went out at a time and you did not notice. People only tend to notice something when they almost run into the back of your car to help persuade them to inform you the brake lights aren't working. Remove any of the brake light bulbs to confirm the bulb is ok or burned. After the bulb has been removed inspect the filament and replace if failed. If the brake light bulbs are ok continue to the next step.

Brake lights will not work

Use a voltmeter and go from the brake switch which is under the brake pedal and go to a brake light if you have no volts or if you have ok for resistance you have a broken wire check your brake switch first I've found that to be the major weak point

How do you change rear windshield brake light bulb in 1988 olds 88?

Hello there,

First of all, it isn't all that easy or quick. First, gently work the gray, carpet like cover loose from the area around the tail light ,(this may give you a little trouble). Once you have done this, you will see three silver nuts. These must be unscrewed. The lower left nut must be accessed through a hole next to where the trunk lid fits. (The screws are permanently attached to the lens housing so will not drop into obscurity when the nuts are removed). After removing the nuts, GENTLY work the lens housing away from the car. You may need a screw driver to unseat the housing, but just be gentle.

You will find three bulbs inside the lens. The brake light bulb is on the lower right side. Simply pull the old bulb out and insert the new one.

Best of luck.

Have replaced fuse and bulbs, but still have no brake lights what else could it be?

Do any of your rear lights work: (left and right, third brake light above the rear hatch?? If all three lights are out and you have replaecd the fuse already I think you might have a bad bake light switch contact on your brake pedal. Depending on your experiance, you can either replace it youself or take it to a dealer to have it done.
I hope this helps you.

How to replace a 2001 mitsubishi galant brake light

Bare with me because I am trying to remember this from memory. If you open your trunk and look on the inside next to the light being replaced, you should see three black protectors which probably appear to hold up the trunk carpeting interior. Remove these protectors and pull back the carpeting (held on by velcro attachments). You should now see three bolts with retaining nuts. Remove the nuts with a deep 10mm socket and pull the light from the body from the outside of the car. After the light is out, you will see three light sockets. The brake light should be the most inner light. Twist the socket towards the left and the light should easily come out. Remove the bulb and replace it with the exact same bulb. The bulb has two filaments, one for the park lights and the other for the brake lights. After you've replaced the bulb, installation is the reverse of removal.

Brake lights do not work All bulbs have been replaced.

Troubleshooting Procedures - Read Completely Before Beginning
(American Car) All Brake Lights Not Working
  • Check System Fuse: A fuse is used to protect the brake light circuit from amperage overload. If the fuse has failed it will not allow the electrical current to continue to the brake lights. To check the fuse, first locate the brake light system fuse in the fuse panel which is either under the dash or under the hood in the power distribution center. Connect the test light to a ground like an engine or dash bracket and turn the ignition key to the "on" position. Using the test light probe both sides of the fuse. If the test light illuminates on both sides the fuse is ok continue onto the next step. If one side of the fuse illuminates the fuse has failed and needs to be replaced. If the fuse fails as soon as it is replaced or when you apply the brake pedal the brake light electrical circuit is shorted to ground. Rarely a system short can occur, a car repair manual is needed to find the wiring schematic for the brake light circuit. Once the brake light wiring has been located inspect and repair as needed.
  • Check Brake Light Bulbs: All cars have three brake light bulbs that create the brake light illumination affect.
  • Checking the Brake Light Switch: A control switch is used to connect the brake light electrical circuit. This switch is located near the brake pedal lever. Basic switches have just two wires, power in and power out to the turn signal switch. Use a test light that is grounded and with the key in the "on" position test for power at one side (wire) of the switch, then press the brake pedal while testing the opposite side (wire). It should illuminate the test light, if electrical power is connected through the switch go to the next step. If no power is detected through the switch the brake light switch has failed and replacement is required. If your car is equipped with more than two wires integrated into the brake light switch a car repair manual is needed to locate the proper brake light circuit wiring.
