Belts squealing About 4 weeks ago the alternator belt failed, causing the alternator to stop, the battery was weak and would not run the electric radiator fans, so the motor started running hot and blew the radiator. I had the car towed in, and the mechanic replaced the radiator and the belt to the alternator, now the new belt broke less than a month later, I took the alternator off and had it tested, I thought maybe the alternator was not spinning like it should, but the alternator checked out fine. I purchased a new belt and reinstalled the belt and the alternator. When I cranked the car the belt did not squeal, but I noticed that the belt was getting too hot in a short time, it was really too hot to touch, I tightened the belt, and that stopped it from getting hot, this morning I actually tried to drive the car to work, I didn't make it but a half mile from home and I noticed that my headlights were getting weaker, like the alternator had stopped working and the lights were running off a weakened battery. Has anyone else had this problem, Help please.
Is your belt slipping? You may have a bad tensioner pulley. Check all pulleys make sure they will spin and not lock up, if they feel really tight or after rotating them around several times they get tight replace

if this has an automatic belt tensioner on it this sounds like the tensioner is weak and needs replacing. a weak or bad tensioner does and can cause belt squealing and can throw the belt alignment off causing your problem.
Most times the squealing noise heard on start up and for some time after is caused by a loose belt driving the alternator. The alternators job is to replace voltage lost when using anything electrical. Your starter takes more voltage (actually amperage) than just about anything else in the car. If the belt isn't tight enough the belt will slip when trying to turn the alternator till eventually enough power is restored to the battery (while slipping, it's still charging but to a far lesser degree). Most cars use a spring loaded belt tensioner. If the tensioner spring becomes weak from age, it will allow slipping. If that has been going on for a long time, the pulley on the alternator likely has become glazed and needs to be roughed up a bit with sandpaper or often even after the tensioner has been replaced the pulley will continue to slip. (it takes about 5 horsepower to turn a alternator when it is at its max charging rate and therefore resists being turned) So, replace the tensioner and make sure the alternator pulley is not glazed and you should not have further problems. Not sure about the light but likely it's related.
If you have a 4cyl then the belts for PS and alternator are separate. Taking a peek under the hood when the engine is running should give you a better idea if a belt is slipping, broken, etc. A common source of squealing is an alternator belt that is too loose and slips under heavy load charging the battery after startup. It's possible that some sort of problem happened due to replacing alternator belt but that belt slipping should be pretty easy to see. (again ... speaking of the 4cyl / 22RE enging)
as the a/c motor is a pump (resistance to turning),if the belt is not adjusted correctly(too loose)it will squeel, and the alternator will not produce enough power to keep the battery charged up.you should always retension the belts after about 1k/1 month after fitting new.
adjust so that the longest run of the belt, between pulleys, has 1/2"flex
New belts tend to stretch after a week or two.Simply retighten the belt now that it has settled in & it will be fine. Was it the alternator belt? That is the most common one to sqeal after replacement.Hope this helps you.
check all the pulleys for alignment and wear, Also check the alternator output (make sure it is not always under load) hook up and ammeter on the positive) what
Are you running a large stereo? if so this can cause this especailly if the large stereo is not fused
