1995 volvo 940 power driver's front seat: moves straight in reverse. The interior edge moves forward in an arc, because the door edge of the seat does not move forward. How do I determine if the problem is a motor or what?

  • pwosing Sep 16, 2009

I bought a new cable for the center motor, which controls the forward-backward motion of the seat. I'm thinking to remove the 2 screws that hold the retainer plate that holds the cable at the motor, remove the rod from the old cable and replace it with the rod from the new cable; replace the screws in the retainer plate and - voila? Does this sound like it might work?

I was able to convince the state inspector that the seat track was ok. Very helpful.

1. Try to center the seat, allowing the side that does move to get in the middle of the movement.
2. Then raise the seat has high as it will go to make clearance for your hand to go under there and push on the cables.
3. On the side that does not move, try pushing in on the cables 1 by 1 until you find the one that is not working.
4. I used a piece of speed tape to keep pressure on the cable so it will work from now on. But I have learned (from an 850 seat back recliner post) that you can get a small butane torch and heat the end of the cable and push it in a little. This will re-engage the cable in the transmission to allow it to work properly.

Hi,

You can change the motor yourself yes - you need to remove the seat from the floor - unbolt it and lift - and roll it over to one side - ( its heavy!) and if you just roll it over - you wont need to disconnect any wiring / srs / airbag systems etc - just disconnect the wiring from the seat motor...

Just check though whilst you are there that there is no problem with the gearing on the seat - the runners... in case its not the motor but the gears...
You will see clearly when you are in there whats what and then you can deal with it however it needs...

As to where to get the parts - I dont know where you live at all - but parts are obviously available from all dealers - or do a search on the net for second hand ones... You may struggle for second hand though because breakers tend not to want to strip the seats ... but give it a try...

I Sincerely hope I have helped you - Please ask me if you need more help...

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

I have a 1991 Volvo 740 wagon. I've tried to put the back seats down flat before, but i can never quite get it to go down all the way. Is it possible? If so, how? Thanks!

You have to flip the bottom of the rear seat forward. There should be a strap to pull where the seat bottom and seat back meet. The seats will not fold all the way down with out flipping the bottom up first.

Electrical has mind of its own!

I think it's called Christine.
Allthough, volvos aren't without their electrical problems.
However, if a 'recall' was neccesary before, I would go straight back to the dealer.
Quickly, before she does something else!
Good luck with that.

How do I fix a 1995 buick park avenues front seat motors?

I had that problem with the motor for seat back tilt.
I had to remove the seat and take the cables out of the motor and connect the drive cables to 2 drills one in forward and one in reverse. I lubricated the threaded shafts and the drive unit with WD40 then ran the drills back and forward till it started moving again. then I lubed again with more wd40 and ran seat back all the way forward and back many times. reassembled and tested the motor by connecting 12 volt cordless drill batery to the motor to verify it is now working.
The problem that I am now having is no power to the drivers side and do have power on pasenger side, think they are the same fuse. Need schmatic/wire diagram to continue my trouble shooting . This should help with yours. test each motor with the cordless drill battery. reverse polarity to reverse direction.
