Unfortunately the only way is to drop the fuel tank. There is no inspection cover under the seat. The fuel pump seal most probably is defective.

SOURCE: 1995 BMW 318Tds Fuel Starvation Problem

Sorry this is not a solution. Just to say I own a 1997 318tds which only starts on the button if the tank is at least half full. This was looked at professionally shortly after i bought the car 3 years ago.( I did wonder why it was sold to me with such a full tank). I was told it would need the fuel tank replacing. Bearing in mind the value of the car & the fact the owner is now too geriatric to do major repairs, I just make sure it is always half-full, and live with it.. This could be your problem. BMWs chap said it was logged on their system as a known but unusual fault.

SOURCE: 1999 Volvo s80 fuel line leak before and after the fuel filter

this perticular solution requires special fuel line tools to disconect the clips on the line. I would first locate the leak and determine if the entire fuel line is at fault or if it is just a connection. most commonly a piece of the line has deterieated and cracked and can be readily replaced with an OE part from a local parts house. a fuel line disconect for your vehicle can be gotten at the same parts place in most cases. Just ask the counter person what disconect it takes.

SOURCE: how do i gain access to fuelpump on 2002 volvo v70

From Volvo Cars of North America letter I received:  "[Volvo] has voluntarily decided to extend warranty coverage for the fuel pump on U.S. model year 2001-2002 Volvo S80, S60, V70, and XC70 vehicles."
The letter goes on to describe conditions that in the end, may result in a fuel odor.  "Coverage is limited to the symptoms described in this letter for the fuel pump only."
Contact a Volvo dealer to have this corrected under warranty.  If you already paid to have this fixed, then you can submit the repair order with a copy of the warranty letter (keeping both for your records) to Volvo on the address on the letter.  If you did not get the letter, I'd suggest contacting Volvo.
Bottom line is that you should not have to pay to have this fixed.

SOURCE: Fuel Pump replacement

you have to remove the rear seats and roll back the carpet. if it is a seven seater you have to take out some ac ducts. then there are two access ports on each side of the floor. they are usually black and have four nuts holding them down you remove those and then you have access to the pump. you need some volvo special tools to remove it. volvo has recall 220 going right now and your fuel pump maybe covered under it. i would definitely talk to the dealership about it. because that would be no out of pocket cost to you

Does petrol tank leaks when overfilled i fillled up the petrol in Murano 2012 and its started leaking. local mechanics checked the gasket found it missing he replaced it this stoped the leaking for a week...

Yep,breather is necessary.Breather line is draining it under the car, less dangerous.Do not feel it to the top.Replace the draining line,dust/water may find a way into the tank, later u'll have to deal it (fuel filter, cloged fuel lines, fuel pump malfunction, fuel gauge malfunction).Track the problem eliminate the hipoteses of a cracked tank, loosed fuel pump.Cheers.

I need to know how to drop the fuel tank so i can change my fuel pump please

You don't need to drop the fuel tank in a 1995 940. There is an access panel in the trunk. Under the trunk liner there is a panel to the left of the backseat access. Unscrew the 4 screws there and you should see a screw-top cover. Remove it and you will have access to the fuel pump and floater.

Where is the Volvo s70 fuel pump located

The stock Bosch fuel pump is located in the fuel tank and can be accessed by removing the rear seat. Certain models have been recalled due to cracked flanges, permitting fuel to leak. If you smell gasoline inside or outside the vehicle or see wet fuel lines underneath the vehicle, contact your local Volvo dealer immediately. See below:

The fuel pump has ben taken apart

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION 2.3L 4-Cylinder and 2.8L 6-Cylinder Engines
  1. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  4. Remove the fuel tank.
  5. Loosen the lock ring at the top of the fuel tank and remove the sending unit with the transfer pump attached. Note the direction of the float in the tank.
  6. Remove the transfer pump from the sending unit. To install:
  7. Install the transfer pump on the sending unit.
  8. Install the sending unit in the fuel tank and tighten the lock ring to specification. Do not overtighten the lock ring as the plastic threads on some fuel tanks are easily stripped.
  9. Install the fuel tank in the vehicle.
  10. Lower the vehicle.
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.
  12. Start the engine and check for leaks. Fig. 1: Fuel pump assembly for the 2.3L 4-cylinder engine 90955g07.gif
Fig. 2: Fuel pump assembly for the 2.8L 6-cylinder engine 90955g17.gif
2.3L and 2.4L 5-Cylinder, and 2.9L 6-Cylinder Engines
  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Tilt the rear seat forward and remove or fold back the trunk compartment carpet over the right-hand wheel well panel.
  4. Disconnect the fuel pump electrical connections. NOTE: Take note of the color markings on the hoses; colored tape should identify hose locations on the pump.
  5. Detach the quick-connect couplers for the fuel delivery and return hoses.
  6. Remove the pump unit by unscrewing the retaining nut using tool 999-5485 or equivalent.
  7. Lift the pump out carefully and remove the rubber seal. When lifting the pump out, do not grab the connections with pliers or any other sharp tools that might cause damage and result in fuel leakage. To install: WARNING
Install the retaining nut while the pump is removed, otherwise the tank connection may swell and the nut will be difficult to install.
  8. Install a new dry seal, making sure that it is seated properly. Lubricate the top and outer side of the seal with petroleum jelly.
  9. Install the pump with the heater connection facing towards the right side of the vehicle.
  10. Install the fuel pump retaining nut and tighten it to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm) using tool 999-5484 or equivalent.
  11. Apply a small amount of petroleum jelly to the delivery and return hose ends and install them on the pump. The delivery line is marked with yellow tape, which should be matched to the yellow marked pump outlet. Make sure that the quick-connectors are properly seated on the pump.
  12. Connect the electrical connections, making sure that they are in the correct position. Install the panels and carpets.
  13. Connect the negative battery cable.

Fuel pump located

Probably in the fuel tank. You may have to drop the tank to gain access to the pump.

I have a 2001 S60. Have a gas leak comming for somewhere on top of the gas tank. It leaks down from the top.Is there an access panel inside the car or trunk so i might be able to get to the top of the tank...

Common problem with this series and model. Volvo extended the warranty for this fuel pump to 150K miles. Not a "recall" but the the warranty was one way around it for them. Contact your dealer and see if your specific model is covered. They will charge a diagnostic fee but if the problem is the pump, there will be no charge for parts and replacement. It is a $600+ dollar dealer repair otherwise.

2002 volvo s80 has leak at top of gas tank. can hear hissing sound. does the exhaust system need to be saw off to repair?

This should be repairable from the top.
Pull out the rear seat cushion and remove the two black round access covers to access the fuel pump covers. The seals for these covers tend to leak and if they are leaking, you will see it when the covers are off.

Gas leaking on top of tank

its most likely either broke the seal on the halfway of the tank or the fill spout has become damaged and needs replacement. id start by testing the pressure of the tank then deciphering whether or not its the tank or the fill spout.
