1991 Ford Tempo Thermostat Replacement

I drive a 1991 Ford Tempo. I recently had the Oil Changed and Oil Filter Changed. Power Steering Fluid was also really old and dirty, had that changed too.

Now, I spent $60.00 to have a mechanic diagnose my over heating problem. Apparently my Thermostat is ''stuck open'' so it needs to be replaced. Instead of spending the $170.00 to have them replace my thermostat I'm going to do it myself. I purchased a new Thermostat and Gasket from Napa Auto Parts, and now need instruction on how to replace it.

If I follow the Radiator hose to the engine, will I find the Thermostat? And should I know anything Special when replacing it? Thank you in Advance! :D

I have a 91 ford tempo gl and I can tell you out of experience you would be better off not going through the frustration and get a mechanic to do it.

What should I do when about 1/3 qt of Power steering fluid was used to top up transmission fluid for 1987 Ford Tempo automatic? Can I drive a few miles to have drained out?

many cars of your vintage did in fact use the same fluids for both. See if the fluid for power steering is reddish or purplish, if so it is ATF also. None the less, it does not hurt to periodically change the fluid in your transmission. A short drive to your service facility should be fine.

My 92 ford tempo shifs hard

If you have recently changed you Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF), the wrong type of fluid may have been put in. Incorrect fluid will cause the transmission to shift poorly. Old or dirty transmission fluid can also cause issues with the designed operation . If you can not remember the last time you changed the ATF or have never changed the ATF, see if an ATF change fixes the issues you are experiencing. Consider having the transmission filter changed also. If you continue to have hard shifting after this there may be more serious problems developing that may have to be dealt with.

Steerin wheel is hard of my ford tempo car . i

Hi:
If you have power steering, first check to see if you have fluid in the power steering reservoir. If you don't have power steering, you most likely have binding in the rack and pinion unit, and that has to be replaced as an assembly, and is a bit pricey, so check your fluid first.

If the fluid is full the power steering pump could be bad, but usually they growl, and are noticeable.

1991 Ford Tempo GL shuts off and check engine light

check to see if there is exaust coming out of the exaust pipe. It sounds like you might have a stopped up catalitic converter.

Location of auto trans dip stick on 91 Ford Tempo 4 cyl.

It's right next to the air filter and behind the radiator fan and to the right of the oil dipstick. The transmissions is black and the oils is yellow. If it's a manual, there's no dipstick there. If not check close to the forewall towards the back of the engine.
