The exhaust has 'twisted' as the connection to the cat conv has separated although the exhaust pipe still goes into it. The rear rubber connectors and hooks are still there and ok and these are all that are currently holding the exhaust in place Is there a fitting for the middle of the exhaust that should hold it in the correct position and can the connection into the cat conv be fixed? Thanks

If the exhaust system was plugged the engine wont run, normally. It will start and idle until the back pressure is such that it can't take in more air/fuel mixture and then stall.
After the converter, there may be a resonator, and then the muffler. Is any exhaust flowing out of the tail pipe? You might try hooking up a scanner and see what your oxygen sensor(s) is/are doing.
Also, scan the MAF(mass air flow) sensor assembly.
Sound like the engine can't breathe, and its getting to much fuel.
what?? bank 2 is the drivers side of the engine sensor 1 is located before the cat conv next to the frame by the trans bell housing very tight location but is possible to change need a o2 socket that looks like a line wrench but beware if its seized you will have to heat with a torch or you will rip the threads out of the pipe/cat
theres always one on the intake manifold working its way down to catalytic convertor
is the oxygen sensor 1 heater circuit(pre cat conv) signal while terminal #25 is oxygen sensor 2 heater circuit (post cat conv)
Have someone turn off the engine while you listen to the tail pipe. The exhaust should stop immediately when the engine is tutned off. If you hear a wheezing, smell a sulpher odor or feel exhaust still coming out, The conv is defective. Yes, a restricted conv will cause loss of power.good luck
Bridget, Was the o2 sensor replaced at the same time as the conv? It should have been. If not, it may be the problem and not the converter,. It's also much cheaper. I'd have the o2 sensor replaced before any further. How many miles on the vehicle? Let me know about the miles. and the yr .
I can try to help. The chk engine light is generally tripped by the #2 02 sensor. The one after the cat converter. It 's purpose is to monitor the efficiecy of the cat converter. You state there is a power loss problem also. This loss of power is common when the cat converter is restricted and the exhaust can't escape as fast as needed. . You can tell the converter is bad by a sulphur smell in the exhaust, a wheezing at the tail pipe, Or, the exhaust does not immediately stop when theengine is turned off. Good Luck. Have the cat conv checked and replaced . I hope yhis is the help you needed, Ned
generally, glowing exhaust is a sign of either the engine being severely retarded, fuel mixture being super lean or the catalytic converter on the exhaust being restricted. Check all. Loosing power can be retarded or restricted cat. I'd check cat first.
