If the key buttons do not work may need new battery in key fob. Not sure if any of this helps. Here is some info I found.

I would start with a new battery in the key fob.

Well first open it up completly. Remove the battery. Get a hair dryer and dry it out completly. Then let it stand for several hours to cool down. Make sure that the contacts where the battery fits are clean of any rust, or corrosion. Now install a new battery. It should work.

SOURCE: 1995 jaguar xj6 dead battery and can't open trunk. please help,
I simply opened the bonnet. Connected the battery charge positive to the + feed on the back of the alternator, connected the negative to the body. Turned it on, immediately the interior light comes on. Turn on the ignition press the cabin boot switch and it opens the boot. Charge battery as normal. Easy Peezy

The solution is to pull out the back seat to get into the trunk. There are two bolts holding the bottom part of back seat (bolts located between bottom and top sections). Then pull out bottom section of back seat and you see the hinge for the top section, remove the bolts and then you can lift up and access the trunk. It's not that hard.
