1996 FORD THUNDERBIRD 4.6 MOTOR WONT START, WHEN I TRY TO START IT THE BELT WONT MOVE THE STARTER IS ONLY SPINING
It sounds like the starter drive is broke. You will have to remove the starter. If you have never done it, it takes jacks to get that far under the car and a good socket set. You need to disconnect the battery and be prepared to disconnect wires under the car. The dangerous part is turning the wheel to make room to drop the starter out.
You can get the starter tested once it is out, If the starter spins the broken part can be replaced but you would have to disassemble the starter. A new or rebuilt starter would have that part included.
You will have to have it towed in if you do not want to work on it. Its about an 1 1/2 hour job in a shop. Good Luck
The starter gear is not ingauging all the way i would go and get a new starter from your local auto parts store they are only around 65 bucks and when u remove the starter use a long flat head screw driver and turn the fly wheel around and make sure that it is still bulted up to the crank shaft the ford 4.6 has a problem with the bults that hold the fly wheel to the crank shaft like to back out and snap off but its most likely just the starter.
If the starter is going zing zing then you need a starter.
Yes, most dealers have the equipment to cut by VIN. Be sure to call ahead and confirm and also determine what proof of ownership they will require. For obvious reasons they have to be careful when providing this service.
If your timing chain or belt is out the belts for the alternator and so forth would not move. Also might check to see of the dampner pulley is turning or staying stationary. Could be a damaged Dampner pulley.
Hi I'm litoshop, if your here the engine turning and the damper is not then you my have one or two problems, first check if the damper is good how to check put some body the turn the key and look at the damper and if the middle part of the damper spins and the outer part of the damper don't then the damper is no good, and if the middle part don't spin spin then check if fly wheel is not broken or the bolts came off if everything look ok then you have a broken crank shaft good luck if this information has been helpful please let use know thank you.

1-Your solenoid inside the starter that moves the gear outward is bad. in that case, replace the starter. or, sometimes, if you just give it a few good hits with a mallet, they can free up and start working again. 2-you may have broken teeth on your flexplate. if so, the starter will spin, but wont be able to turn the engine over. if you remove the starter, youll see right away if there are broken teeth on that flexplate. if so, have it replaced.
