Radiator cooling fans not working? The ECM is protecting the engine by shutting it down.

In park or neutral not much load on the engine, when you put it in gear, there is a load. How may miles on the engine? How long since a tune-up? Any applicable trouble codes? Check and clean the idle air system and throttle body, see if it helps? Check cylinder compression. If the compression is way low, it may be tough trying to get it to run correctly.
In the old days, carbed engine, no computer, sometimes we'd set the idle in drive, at least it was driveable, it wouldn't die every time you stopped at a stop sign or red light. Yeah, when you put in park or neutral, the rpms would go high. Sometimes, your just trying to keep it on the road, if possible.

Greg, I read your complete message, but nowhere did I see that you replaced the Cam Sensor. The EGR will cause it to stall at stops but usually will not prevent it from restarting. it runs ok cold, and as it warms , the engine. it stalls.?

my guess, it starts fine then stalls; hot.
but can you save the stall?

stalling is complex. can be many systems in the car.
but can be broken down to :
Ever did the 60k mile tune up,ever? if not why not.
never skip 60k\'s or the motor will run like garbage.


1: lost electrical power. to EFI .
2: bad engine, in that when it gets hot , it loses compression.
3: lost park. 1 or more cylinders, 4 or 6 you never said.
4: bad injection. 1 or 6 of them, flooding or starving.
5: bad fuel.
6:EGR sticking , usually this happens just before a stop sign.
7: if the stall was a bog and the fast right foot saved the stall, easy
the ISC is sticking closed.

sounds like your fuel pump is dying.

.with all the sensors and electronics made of plastic,if they are hot and you put water on them they can crack and get water in them. They might send the wrong message to your engine control module (computer)

sounds like a broken wire, but i cant say where, on ignition, fuel pump, under dash, quik scan could save alot of time an money

check the park switch for wire problems

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls and low idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve, they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
