2007 Chev Uplander 3.9 Could ECM need replaced? Where is it located?

Vehicle had been running. Had a cold snap with single digit temperatures...vehicle hadn't been started for 4 or 5 days. .tried to start it, wouldn't start. Had it towed to a Chev dealership, they put a code reader on it, showed P0621, they said we needed a new battery and alternator. Bought both and had them installed. Still won't start. Had old alternator tested, it is still good.

This is not that clean cut, ECM failure is not that common. The battery died and that caused the no start. This could also account for the setting of that code because of loss of field charge in the alternator. A dealership can write off parts that are not bad, if they did not do the work, you are stuck with the parts. ECM is not cheap. I would check the CPS first.

    What is the CPS? Location?

  • Brad Brown Feb 25, 2018

CPS is the crank position sensor. IF you google that term and the make model and year or go to autozone and make a free account and logon and look at the free repair guides it will show you the location and what it looks like.

change your battery cables and check all wires on the alternator for loose connections, expecially the grounds.

SOURCE: Charging Light On After Replacing Alternator/Battery1999Windstar

Hi, I can't tell you exactly what is wrong because there is too much involved at this point, what with 2 shops working with it, but I can give you some advise on what else to check. On the alternators and the wiring that supports them a small volt charge is taken off one of the slip rings, where the brushes ride, for the purpose of turning out the light. As I remember, this is a yellow wire that runs back to the dash.

To the alternator, it would be one of the wires that plug into the side of the alternator case.

SOURCE: 2000 olds sillouette, headlights on, no brake/turn signal light

i would chk. break light switch. should be under dash above break pedel arm. emergency flashers will be on its own fuse, turn signals should have own fuse. as far as interior lights surging that could be ground or alt. chk. battery cables make sure clean and tight. not good idea unhooking bat. cable when running, one spark or surge to computer could burn up computer. besides that realy won't tell you anything if a diod is bad in alt. it may not show up until you tax the system. its best to take it someware like autozone, or any major auto parts store and have it chk.

SOURCE: 96 Grand Am SE2 2.4L starts and dies immediately

I had the SAME thing with my car!! Remove your air bag module its a grayish looking box that deploys your air bags, my air bag light was on but it was on and off. I pumped gas in my car one night and when i went to crank it my car cut right off after a split second. My mechanic took time on it but discover that it was a secrity issue. He removed the air bag module and presto it fired right up. I thought it was a fuel filter or fuel pump. It was just the air bag module, people freaked out about it once i told them what it was....it should be under the passenger seat, i believe u may have to take out the seat to get to it.

2007 Chev Uplander 3.9 Could ECM need replaced? Where is it located?

Without testing we'd only be guessing ! You have no idea of the complexity of the electronics on your vehicle . Replacing the ECM would mean a trip back to the dealer to have it programmed . Without programming your vehicle will never start . You had new battery an alternator installed , did it start an run when you picked it up. The charging system on your vehicle is computer controlled . DTC P0621
DTC P0621 : Generator L-Terminal Circuit
The engine control module (ECM) uses the generator turn ON signal circuit to control the load of the generator on the engine. A high side driver in the ECM applies a voltage to the voltage regulator. This signals the voltage regulator to turn the field circuit ON and OFF. The ECM monitors the state of the generator turn ON signal circuit. The ECM should detect low voltage on generator turn on signal circuit when the ignition is ON and the engine is OFF, or when the charging system malfunctions. With the engine running, the ECM should detect high voltage on the generator turn on signal circuit. The ECM performs key ON and RUN tests to determine the status of the generator turn on signal circuit.

Your best bet take it back to the dealer .

CHEVROLET UPLANDER no heat at idle

how many miles?

take off the radiator cap when cold - top it off - - then start it and again top it off - keep an eye on this level for 4 days - doing this every single morning - if the water is always at the top - -done - if not - then check for a small leak that only leaks under pressure - these can take two people one to rev up the engine and one to look for a slight leak --
next is replace the thermostat - then of course the water pump - also take down the vin number and call ur local dealer - ask for any recalls on ur vin # as they are specific to that vehicle
