HOw to clear CEL lamp and DTC errors.
Ken
there are 4 ways. (on all usa cars 1996 to now)
1: push reset on any scan tool here. all OBD2 tools in usa do it.
2: pull the memory fuse, on the ECU/PCM
3: pull battery neg lug. for 5min,. turn key on can lower time here..
what you are doing is letting the memory bank NVRAM caps discharge, to below 0.7v. the ecu has a memory wire... 12v.
4: drive them off, per the SM rules, each DTC has a rule on this
dont look as some take an hour, or takes 4 cold starts. or. or or.
now if you pull the neg lug, watch out, some things my bet unhappy,
1: lost radio stations. or nav settings. etc.
2: lost learn modes of sensors on car.
3: lost transmission learn modes.
if you reset the ECU, and the CEL comes back that means
its REAL a real hard set error, (things break on all cars made)
so get if fixed, that is what the lamp means, get it serviced.
or scan it and read the SM on each DTC set. but I bet you dont know how to do that, or use tools to do what the SM tells you.
but I could be wrong, but most folks 99.9 just get it serviced.
SM- service manual or FSM, factory SM.
You can reset any vehicle code by taking off the negative (black) lead off from battery for 30 minutes. make sure it don't touch anything else. if you have light on go to your local auto parts place and have code checked before hand. resetting light will also reset all codes and delete them. why is the light on?
