1997 Geo Prizm Questions & Answers
I have a 1997 Geo prizm cannot clear check engine light after repairs
ok ,so you have OBD2 car,in the USA. canada went OBD2 in 1998, so this is usa car.and found out all scan tools work on it. yup.'but then failed to post the DTC errors. you have.why not tell that first. ?each can be driving off but will take, hoursor will take many driving cycles .The GEO Prism or the Toyota, Corolla (same car)BOTH service manuals covers this. the lamp will not go off , if the true problem is not cured. (by Design and federal laws of the USA)'why not post the symptoms and DTC errors and ask for help.now how to clear DTCs. (all ways from Sunday)_1: fix the problem.2: then there are 4 ways to reset stored DTC errors (in memory ) not live errors.you can not delete live errors, well, you might for seconds... the bam,its back.live. a: pull the ecu memory fuse (ask) for 5min.b: push reset DTC on the scan tool(a button)c: pull the battery, for 5min. d: drive them off as the service manual tell you, nah.this only deletes stored errors from OBD2 memory.(EEPROM)why not post the symptoms first?and the real DTC'S stored.you can not fix cars guessing nor, pushing buttons.
Car has power but wont start

Finding vacuum hose that feeds all cylinders
old post day, for underdog cars....
first off we dont know what engine you have. not 1998 1ZZFE.
4AFE or 7AFE.
and what country, usa is not canada. so ... vacuum = smog and those are governed by country and even California, is a country.
legally and smog laws, (CAL-ARB rules regs)
next time show photo of hose. we can never guess parts.
unless the real name in the factory book is used.
IS the hose huge or tiny, that be a huge clue.
My car has rough idle, what is wrong
First thing I do to older cars is a compression test on the cylinders. If they aren't up to par, I advise customers to not invest money into it. Unless they want to replace/rebuild the engine.
02 wiring diagram
you posted 3 times, and all 3 times same questionbut if you read your other posts, bingo.you never said the symptomsnor said if it is the front or rear 02 sensor.so i toss coin and land FRONT. B1S1.i did answer for all 3 engines, documented the oxygen sensor B1S1 on all 3 ECU'sso , look.? at them.?
Why is it leaking?
It sounds like a water pump. Releasing the pressure by removing the radiator cap could make it start leaking again because the water pump is probably the only component on the cooling system that would leak, then stop and then leak again. If you had a void in the radiator, hoses or expansion plugs, releasing the pressure would have no effect.
the water pump us with the timing belt so the repair will be extensive. You must check the cooling system's ability to hold pressure, and different pressures at that, with a cooling system pressure tester. That's really the only right way to diagnose this.
97 geo prizm leaking radiator coolant and it's not the holes or the radiator
Hi Watson:
Finding the source of the leak should be fun. Give this a try. First, the engine has to be cold. Check the water pump bushing by wiggling the drive pulley. If it's sloppy, the water pump probable needs replacing.
Remove the radiator cap and make sure the fluid level is OK. Then screw the cap on tight. Make sure the engine is as dry and clean as possible around the hoses, water pump, and the area where you think the leak might be.
What you are going to do is start the engine (be aware of moving parts and your fingers--- they don't like each other) and let the engine warm up. As it gets warmer, pressure will build up in the cooling system, and eventually will start to leak out of the bad spot. It may be the seal in the water pump, it may be a manifold or head gasket, but it will for sure, leak under pressure. Having a flashlight and patience will help, but you'll find it.
How do I change clutch fluid in a 97 Geo Prizm?
like all cars, with hyda. m/t clutch,
it is a stick right, all cars have clutch, old cars had a/t drain for clutch.
so my answer is for stick clutch M/C drain an fill.
so the cap tells you its DOT-3/4
so bleed it just like brakes, ever do those before.
if not watch any of 100s of youtube videos on that and clutch.
there are 5 ways to do it. (tools vary)
ill show 2man way
drain out 3/4 fluid from res. and fill to top with fresh)
i use a turkey baster, for 1buck.
you press pedal to floor.
person 2 opens bleed valve at the SLAVE>
then closes it as flow stops
person 2 yells, ok , repeat.
and repeats (all)until all old fluid is gone and fresh seen below.
that is it.
Hoe do I Change my shift solenoid on my 1997 geo prism
first at the transmission, there are 4 automatics used.
if its a A241e , the E means electronic shifted.
did you check voltages at this connector first? if the voltages
are wrong, it many not be the solenoid.,
If the voltages are wrong it can be:
- TCM brain, inputs wrong
- TCM bad.
- wires from TCM to tranny damaged. (cut or corrosion etc)
- the transmission ground strap missing, cut or not tight.
- if you scan the TCM , it tells you #1 DTC errors
did you scan the PCM/TCM to see the DTC errors from the trans?
no? then why not>? (ask how)
to work on cars, know how it works and what transmission is really there out of 4 possible.
alldata.com shows this. log in and read it?
example 1:
241E
drain and drop pan
and put in these parts.
52-9001
http://www.rostratransmission.com/transmission-solenoids-by-rostra-transmission.php
Where is the shift solenoid located on a 1997 geo prizm
inside the transmission. or
Ok, there are 2 such things, in an automatic, sometimes,3.
the park lock out solenoid, in the shift lever box, (console
the solenoids in transmission
and some have a seperated TCC clutch lock up solenoid same place
why not post symptoms first, and not Easter egg hunts.
the car is (really) Toyota Corolla.
and
here it is , inside tranny
that is , if you even have this transmission,
A245E below, there are 3 others that are not E- shifted. so.....
A131, A240L, and A241L automatics uses, on these cars.
97 geo Prizm. My tail light fuse keeps getting
Replacing the wiring is simple IF all upi are replacing is the socket. If you haven't already, check the socket for rust, corrosion, etc. Replace if needed. Check and replace the fuse as well as the turn indicator relay (this is under the dash). To find it, turn on your blinker (left or right) and feel for it (you will feel it clicking-assuming its working ay all, it should be). These get weak, and don't make a "clean" connection and can cause shorts at either end of the vehicle in respect to blinkers, hazards etc. Also, make sure that all other bulbs and sockets are in good repair\condition. If the problem persists, than the problem may be a break in the wiring, but not likely. Check all other fuses as well whole your checking the blinker\tail light fuses(s) and relays.
