There is either a small 'c' clip on the front/bottom side or it has an iternal snap ring. If it is the 'c' clip you should see a small slot that you can pop the clip out. If it has the internal one, it pulls straight up and off. Warning: Do not twist it, you will break something expensive in the shifter. From the service manual....
Detaching the shift control knob from the shift lever may require a large amount of physical effort.
Do not twist the shift control knob while pulling.
Firmly grasp the shift control knob.
Pull straight up to detach from the shift lever.
Installation Procedure
Align the shift control knob to the shift lever.
Firmly press down on the shift control knob in order to attach to the shift lever. An audible sound will be heard when the internal clip is fully seated.
Here's a video too!... How to Remove shift Knob Cadillac Seville
some shift knobs have a lock nut under the knob . I usually looks like a chrome ring finish. Try turning it down to release the knob and undo the knob.
You need to remove the shift handle first...key must be on...no need to start...pull shift lever down to low gear...look on the back side of the knob...you should see a u-shaped clip head...pry gently under the u-shape with a scredriver to begin removal...then use needle nose pliers to completely pull the clip out...after this is removed...you will be able to kift the shifter knob off...Don't know if you mean replace shift knob...(known for breaking) or actual metal shift lever...if you need the shifter arm, your best find would be at your local salvage yard...some will remove for you...some will let you find your model and remove yourself...To re-install put the shift knob back on the shift lever...to lock in place then re-insert the u-clip to lock in place...Many good mechanics are not familiar with removing these shift knobs...Hope this helps.
To check this out you must remove the shift handle by using a butter knife to remove a horseshoe clip facing the very front of the handles shank. Then remove the shifter plate to check the cables
There is a plasticactuator stick under the shift knob. Remove the "horse shoe" clip from the shift knob and remove knob by pulling strait up. You can twist it right and left a very small amount to loosen the knob, but not much.
Once you have the shift knob removed you will see the plastic actuator stick. Push down on the stick and put shift lever in park. If that works, the shift knob or stick is worn out.
Let me know.
Regard,
On my 2000 jetta glx, I had to replace both the shift knob and boot as one. It is built as one unit. You have to pull the boot up over the shift knob, break/bend a clip to "unlock" the shift knob then pull up. I hope the new knob you got has the boot built in and comes with a new clip.
There are two types of shift knobs. One that unscrews and one that the lower trim of the shift knob separates from the knob using a trim stick. After separating the lower trim from the knob pull upward to release the knob from the shift lever. If a new shifter assembly is being installed, unscrew the original shift knob or separate the lower trim from the knob and pull up to remove the knob from the shift lever. Screw the knob onto the new shifter assembly's lever no more than 14 turns or install the lower trim onto the shift lever then push the knob onto the shift lever and install the lower trim piece onto the shift knob.
