My engine light came on and my husband put the machine to my car. It said I had a emission evaporative large leak. Where could it be located and how bad is it???
It could b as simple as a bad gas cap or could b a fuel leak worth getting cheated out but cheap your gas cap is tight first
You most likely need a new evaporative purge valve.
Besides the engine light, another symptom is hard starting after filling with fuel, because the filling makes lots of strong fuel vapor in the tank and that gets sucked into the manifold, causing an overly rich mixture. Also, if you ignore this problem for a while, your catalytic converters will be ruined, which is a very expensive problem, that I discovered the hard way.
The valve is located at the firewall side of the engine behind the fuel injection. It has 2 hoses and a plug. If you disconnect the hose which goes to the fuel tank (the passenger side one) and start the car, and put your finger on the hose nipple, you should feel no vacuum. If you do, the valve is bad. I bought mine online for about $32, free shipping. I think from Amazon. They wanted $60-$68 at the parts stores, and they were out of stock. The vacuum hoses are kind of hard to remove. There is a tang you have to work with.
This is the part I ordered:

Make sure you put it on the right way round. I first had it backwards and the hoses are hard to get off again.

it is located on the passengerside under the altenator closest to the firewall. make sure the vehicle is turned off reach in under the altenator and you should feel the cap.

first be sure that its the engine light and not the "service" light. the service light will usually illuminate if its time for an oil change. if its the service light ur owners manual should tell u how to reset it. if its ur engine light then try disconnecting ur positive battery cable for 1 minute. that should reset ur ecm and get rid of the engine light. if the engine light comes back on then have a diagnostic scan done to determine whats causing it. You can generally find a vaccum leak by pressure testing the system. Most auto parts stores sell a vaccum tester relatively cheap. Or you can take it to a shop and they will pump your sytem full of a uv sensitive die and then use a black light to find the leak. If it says vaccum leak at engine on the vent solenoid then all you need is the schematic of your vaccum system to find the solenoid and you should find your leak theoretically.

You may have an overloaded carbon cannister, the carbon cannister stores fuel vapors and is part of the evaporative emission control system, I will be willing to bet if you change it the smell will stop.

probably not but the switch over is ez you probably need a harness..thats about it..
