You most likely need a new evaporative purge valve.
Besides the engine light, another symptom is hard starting after filling with fuel, because the filling makes lots of strong fuel vapor in the tank and that gets sucked into the manifold, causing an overly rich mixture. Also, if you ignore this problem for a while, your catalytic converters will be ruined, which is a very expensive problem, that I discovered the hard way.
The valve is located at the firewall side of the engine behind the fuel injection. It has 2 hoses and a plug. If you disconnect the hose which goes to the fuel tank (the passenger side one) and start the car, and put your finger on the hose nipple, you should feel no vacuum. If you do, the valve is bad. I bought mine online for about $32, free shipping. I think from Amazon. They wanted $60-$68 at the parts stores, and they were out of stock. The vacuum hoses are kind of hard to remove. There is a tang you have to work with.

This is the part I ordered:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JW1WZXS?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00

Make sure you put it on the right way round. I first had it backwards and the hoses are hard to get off again.

Update: It failed again, the same way after maybe 2 years. Replaced the valve again. Again ordered the same thing from Amazon.

SOURCE: engine light 2006 pontiac g6(reset)

first be sure that its the engine light and not the "service" light. the service light will usually illuminate if its time for an oil change. if its the service light ur owners manual should tell u how to reset it. if its ur engine light then try disconnecting ur positive battery cable for 1 minute. that should reset ur ecm and get rid of the engine light. if the engine light comes back on then have a diagnostic scan done to determine whats causing it. SOURCE: Service Engine and Service Vehicle lights

You can generally find a vaccum leak by pressure testing the system. Most auto parts stores sell a vaccum tester relatively cheap. Or you can take it to a shop and they will pump your sytem full of a uv sensitive die and then use a black light to find the leak. If it says vaccum leak at engine on the vent solenoid then all you need is the schematic of your vaccum system to find the solenoid and you should find your leak theoretically.

SOURCE: Fuel smell near the fuel tank

You may have an overloaded carbon cannister, the carbon cannister stores fuel vapors and is part of the evaporative emission control system, I will be willing to bet if you change it the smell will stop.

What is a check engine light code po442 on pontiac sunfire mean?

Your ECM has detected a small leak in the evaporative emission system. It could be a bad gas cap, but is usually weathered/cracked vacuum lines between the carbon canister and the various valves in the system. Do a visual inspection, and if that doesn't reveal anything, you may need to do a smoke test. Eventually, without correcting the problem, it may become a P0456 - a large leak.

However, y9ur gas smell could be a cracked fuel filter, or cracked full line, or loose injector port. Get it looked at if you do not know how to check these things. The heat of your engine mixed with a fuel leak is a bad combination

How do you remove the headlight assembly on a 05 Pontiac G6 GT to replace headlight bulb? When unlocking car, the bulb works, but when starting or putting car in drive light goes off. Is the bulb the...

real interesting... there should be no relation to the "drive" and the head light. current drawn by the starter causes the lights to go out or dim. Check the headlamp relay and for corrosion on connector to lamp assemblies in the engine compartment. On back of assemblies there is a large diameter plastic retainer after you remove the wire clip. Turn counter clockwise and pull back. a wire clip should retain the bulb itself

An Evap leak in a car is usually fuel fumes leaking from the evap system. The purpose of the system is to expel pressure built in the gas tank, collect the fumes, and then at the right moment, purge the fumes into the intake to be burned. On newer cars, a leak in the system will set off the check engine light. The leak doesn't have to be big... in fact, it can be tiny. As in, can't see with the naked eye, tiny. A smoke machine is usually used to find the leak. A popular cause of an evap code is a loose gas cap, as the gas tank and filler neck itself are part of the system.
