I got a 96 Buick Riviera the gear shifters in the center console I got the button often out of it but I don't see no key or no bolt hold it on and it won't twist come up for nothing

the solenoid that releases it is bad or stuck from spilled drinks. try to put it in neutral with the key turned forward one click.

you have what is called a btsi, brake trans shift interlock that may be the problem, usually there is a little square cover on the console you can remove and use a screwdriver to depress the latching mechanism to shift the car out of park

You should be able to hear the clicking in the shifter and the switch--I think this is normal cause when mine is stuck in park you CANT hear it.

My mother had the same problem in her 2004 SC Lariat. All you have to do is pop up that center console where the gear shifter is (it's connected by pop in fastners) and push that white default button on the side of the gear shift. After you get tired of doing this for a bout a week, the dealer will try and charge about 6-$700 bucks for this piece. Luckly we got it replaced for nothing...Thank God!!!

I forgot what the dealer said why was it malfunctioning; you might want to try and see if there is a recall on it first before you go and shell out some money. Hope this helps.

I'm actually surfing through yahoo to fix another problem I'm going through...the flashing climate control unit. Yeah, her's went out and I'm trying to fix it instead of going to the dealer.

ok, this is a little tricky, open the cubby hole/ arm rest, lift up the little mat in the bottom (if you still have it) there will be two bolts under there, take them out, then, where the piece that you just worked on meets the area where the gear shift is, there will be a screw on each side, take both out, set the e-brake, and slide the cubby console off the e brake, then if you look down in the hole, you will see a small 2-wire harness that you have to twist out, thats where the light is, Hope this helps!
