SOURCE: how to remove the egr valve on a 1993 mercury

Jack up the passengers side of the car, get a 1 1/16" wrench break loose the fitting to the manifold, hold a 24 mm wrench on the fitting to the manifold, loosen the flare nut on the tube. Then using a 10 mm socket, about 2 inches long, loosen the two nuts under the EGR valve, then take the both out, remove the vacuum hose to the top of the EGR valve, and the sensing line from the small tube. then completely remove the flare nut from the orifice fitting on the manifold. BE CAREFUL with the tube, do not bend it or break it, you may find PB blaster useful the night before on a cold engine loosen these fittings. Once the EGR valve is out, remove the orifice out of the manifold, remove the tube from the EGR valve, again be careful, mark the tube to EGR position before pulling this off, because the top fitting to EGR needs tightened before you put it back in, it will make the lower fitting difficult if you do not line it up right, dry fitting from under the car is helpful, mark it, and then tighten the top. Clean out the tube, be careful not to bend the little tube, either inside or outside the larger tube, it sticks out inside. Clean the orifice, clean the manifold face carefully not to score it, check for blockage there too. Apply anti-seize to the orifice, put it back in the manifold, then apply anti-seize to the bolts for the EGR valve, and the flare nuts both ends. Apply some silicon to the EGR valve face, just enough to hold the gasket in place, put the new gasket on, start the bolts two turns in the gasket, it will hold them in place, then start them in the manifold, then start the lower flare fitting to orifice, tighten the top bolts, and then the flare nut, connect the vacuum line, connect the sensing line. I just recently did this process, it works, if have other EGR issues, the valve is the easiest.

will not be a vapor lock as such but a vacuum in the system caused by a faulty EVAP system vent solenoid

Section 03-13: Evaporative Emissions 1995 Town Car, Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis Workshop Manual DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION Evaporative Emission Canister Fuel vapor emitted through the evaporative emission valve (9B593) is stored in two evaporative emissions canisters (EVAP canister) (9D653) . I think you should have 2 engine vacuum lines, one for each canister.

---------------------------------------------------------------
Evaporative Emission Tube Shut Off Valve The evaporative emission tube shut off valve (9G332) is located in-line between the evaporative emission valve (9B593) and the evaporative emissions canister (EVAP canister) (9D653) . The evaporative emission tube shut off valve control valve is mounted on the fuel tank (9002) by an integral bracket. The evaporative emission tube shut off valve closes the flow path from the evaporative emission valve to the evaporative emissions canister during refueling to prevent overfilling of the fuel tank .

I have 1995 mercury grand marquis how can I tell if I have to change out the charcoal canister and will it make my check engine light go on

There are several things that can make it necessary to replace the charcoal canister. It could be saturated with moisture (water). This can cause all kinds of problems with your evaporative emissions system including low or no flow of the fuel vapors to the manifold with the engine running and "purging"and high hydrocarbons escaping into the atmosphere when the engine is shut off because water saturation will prevent the hydrocarbon absorption that the canister is supposed to provide. This type of failure can be verified by removing the canister and either turning it upside-down andsee if any water runs out or (preferred method) measuring the weight of the canister. A saturated canister will weigh much more than a new one. Most manufacturers provide specifications for this.

A very common problem with charcoal canisters is that the charcoal bags inside the canister burst and the little charcoal pellets are released into the vapor lines. This can cause everything from clogging the vapor lines to jamming the vent solenoid or the purge solenoid. The pellets can even get drawn into the intake manifold and cause damage to valves or pistons.

Another common problem with charcoal canisters is that they can develop large cracks in the housing. The cracks are usually the result of water saturation that has frozen during cold weather. When the temperature rises and the water inside the canister thaws, there is now a large vacuum leak that can cause everything from Evaporative Emissions fault codes to "lean oxygen sensor" codes. This can also cause extreme amounts of dirt and debris to be ingested by the engine - particularly on vehicles with the canister in the rear. Dust and dirt gets stirred-up by the front wheels and wind draft and the rear gets blasted with it. The large vacuum leaks that can be created by cracks in the canister are like a magnet to this stuff and of course, get ingested by the engine.

Can it cause your Check Engine light to come on? ABSOLUTELY! The problems listed above can cause all kinds of engine control problems that will cause the light to come on. The most common codes would be "EVAP Vent Solenoid", "EVAP Purge Solenoid", "FTP Sensor", and "O2 Sensor Lean" codes. (There is no fault code for the canister itself, but canister failure can be the ROOT CAUSE of several codes)

THERE IS NO AIR COMING OUT OF THE VENTS FOR THE AIR CONDITIONING OR HEATER ON MY 1999 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS LS

If all air is coming out the defroster reguardless of the position of the selector, you have a vacuum leak or a vacuum line is disconnected.

Po456 evaporative emission system leak--- check engin light

Check your gascap, make sure it is tight. Check your PCV valve and look at large hoses going to a canister. This code means you are not getting the proper vacuum in the system that vents your gastank or engine.

When driving with the AC running I am getting gasoline-like odors from the vent. I checked the lines and don't have a leak anywhere.

Have the pcv valve checked, it might be stuck in the closed position and not venting the crankcase, also have the emissions charcoal canister checked, the filter might be clogged or saturated with gas.
