SOURCE: TIMING MARKS CAMBELT REPLACEMENT FOR CL-T CHARADE, PLEASE

Hi Cas,

1) timing belt - see the small dot on tooted crank (small) pulley and match this with a notch ^ on engine body. Align the 'F' on overhead camshaft front pulley with lower crank shaft (small pullet). You should also alight the top pulley with a ^ on right side of big pulley when facing engine from front

In case of diesel pump:
2) cam belt - alight the dot mark on small camshaft pulley with notch ^ on tappet cover. Move and hold pump pulley and alight it with dot on this pulley to dot mark on plate to which pump is bolted.

Gulfraz, Karachi, Pakistan

What are the chance that I will not need a value job after timing belt broke

A "valve job" typically means resurfacing the valve seats. It is unlikely you would need that after the timing belt broke unless you needed it before the timing belt broke - they aren't related wear items. Depending on the engine (if it is an "interference" engine) you may need new valves or a new top end of the engine because the valves may collide with the pistons when the timing belt breaks, causing a lot of damage. If your engine is not of the "interference" design type, then you probably only need a new timing belt; many shops also recommend replacing the water pump too because its failure can often damage even a new timing belt and there usually is no (or very little) additional labor cost involved. Other maintenance might also be recommended at the same time (like replacing spark plugs), but that too depends on your specific engine.

I found this info from interference engine database. I don't know if info is accurate?

He timing belt broke. mechanic says replacement wont help because the car has over 200'000 miles on it. he says we need a new engine. do you agree?

Let's see what went on in the mechanic's head...

Timing belt broke. Likely that means your engine also has bent valves, because that's what happens when the timing belt breaks while the engine is running.

At 200k miles, likely the rings are pretty worn. Does it use much oil? How was the compression before the timing belt broke? Low?

At 200k miles, I'd be thinking that once it's open, replace the bearings, too. They're likely worn out.

Yeah, sounds like a replacement engine to me, too... Cheaper than doing everything to rebuild yours.

This is a 4cyl diesel Beetle. The timing belt broke while driving. Dealer claims no damage done, replaced belt and car was driven for a few weeks. Began to start a bit sluggish, dealer said glowplugs...

my books show it as a interference engine in which case valve damage is most likely to occur
however if that was the case , it would be having a miss from the start and would not run 2 weeks before something happened
if a valve spring breaks there could be valve piston contact but it is doubtful if that would destroy the engine but again breaking valve springs is rather rare on diesel engines
the engine would not just quit but would rattle and bang it's head off then develope a big noisy miss from a hole in the piston
so I suspect a timing belt problem from when they removed/replaced the head after the glo-plug fix or a crank/cam shaft position sensor or wires ( possible faulty connections for the cam shaft)
I would suggest finding an accredited service center for a proper diagnosis and quote for engine repairs

Does a 2004 prado have acam belt or a chain belt

Hi Waynee,
You forgot to say which engine is in your vehicle?
The HZ engine has timing gears and a timing belt (That's a diesel engine) the belt drives the injector pump
The KZ engine also has gears and a timing belt,. (Also a diesel engine) same as above.
The RZ engine uses just a timing belt (And that one is a petrol engine)
