It depends on which distributor you have. If you have one with a vacuum line going to it, simply remove the line from the distributor and plug it off so it won't leak. start the engine and time it the conventional way with a timing light hooked to #1 cylinder wire, which is the front one on the driver's side.

If you have the HEI set-up, with the coil in the top of the distrbutor, then connect a Tach to the TACH terminal on the distributor and the other lead to battery negative, UNLESS the instructions for the tach you are usung specify different. Some tachs will specify Tach term inal and battery Positive.

SOURCE: 1984 pontiac parisienne how to replace ignition

The ignition switch is on top of the steering column. You will have to remove the trim piece under the steering column and then loose the 2 bolts (1/2 inch) that holds the steering column. Watch your shift ind if it starts to move you will have to unhook ( silver or black clip with a small cable attached to it). Make sure you unhook the battery and block the wheels to keep the car from rolling. The switch uses the same bolts and the dimmer switch. Remove old switch and install new switch.

My parisienne back fires in the engine sometimes when I am quick accelerating the engine. what causes this?

it can be ignition timing off a little, it could be lack of fuel under acceleration, worn timing chain, EGR valve opening too soon causing a lean condition.

My 1986 Pontiac Parisienne has an oil light on, but I just got an oil change and fuel system cleaning yesterday. Now the engine is making a rattling sound when I drive and stops when I slow down.

do not drive it. have the fault checked immediately. check whether there is oil in your engine. Something may have gone wrong yesterday!!! Driving without soring the problem out could cost you very dear, engines are not supposed to make rattling sounds at all when being driven!!!!!!!!!!!
