Hi there I am having a problem with my 2000 chevy impala.Its a 3.8. The dash lights will not work and the tail lights will not work either. I have replaced the head light switch,have checked the fuses, and relays.They are all in good working order! But now I have no brake lights either. Does it sound like its grounding out somewhere in my car or no?? Im the only person that can fix this problem besides takin it to the shop which I refuse to pay 70 for a check and then 70 per hour after they figure out the problem!.My husband is in Iraq so anyone out there that can help me figure out this damn problem??? PLEASE:(

The park, tail and marker lamps, including the license lamps, turn on when the headlamp switch is placed in either the PARK or the HEAD position, or anytime the headlamps are requested. The RT I/P #1 fuse in the RH I/P fuse block supplies battery positive voltage to both the park lamp relay switch contacts and to the park lamp relay coil circuit. The park lamp relay coil is controlled by the body control module (BCM). When the headlamp switch is placed in the PARK position, the BCM energizes the park lamp relay coil control circuit.
Current flows from the park lamp relay switch to both front and rear park lamp fuses and to their respective park/tail lamps. The front park lamps are grounded at G101. The rear park lamps are grounded at G302. The license plate lamps are a part of the rear park lamp circuit and are grounded at G302. The inadvertent power control feature prevents the park lamps from remaining on more than 10 minutes if left on. If the park lamps are turned on after the ignition switch has been turned OFF, or is in the ACCY position, they will remain on until turned off or until the battery runs dead.
A surveillance mode is available in Special Equipment Option (SEO) vehicles. The headlamps and park lamps may be disabled by using the emergency vehicle interior lamp switch.
Stop Lamps
The BRAKE SW fuse in the RH I/P fuse block supplies battery positive voltage to the normally-open stop lamp switch. When you press the brake pedal the switch contacts close and battery positive voltage is supplied to the left and right stop lamp assemblies and to the center high mounted stop lamp (CHMSL). The left and right stop lamp along with the CHMSL are grounded at G302.
The park lamp relay is located in the right side instrument panel fuse box . Do you know where this is ? There is also rear park light fuse an a front park lamp fuse . both are 15amp . The fuse panel is at the right end of the instrument cluster , door has to be open to get to it .

Did you check fuse circuit for voltage? Use a test light with headlamp switch on to check for voltage. See the park lamp relay, I'm not saying the relay is faulty, but, you might be able to use jumper wire on load side of relay, if lamps work, the problem is on control side of relay, for some reason.
The load side of relay is that line with arrowhead. There could be other issues.

check the wiring from the tailights back to the fuse panel, it sounds like an open connection. if i recall correctly check under the dash on the drivers side near the fuse panel for a bunch of wires in a bundle and look carefully for a wire or two that are cut/shorted/or seperated, you can also check under the drivers side kick panel by the hood release.

there's a button on the right side of the steering wheel that says serv push that button. It's put right there for when they use them as police cars you can cut the headlights off. You will probably notice that dash lights are on.

sounds like a broken wire in the harness. look around the bumper area,sometimes along the frame. may have to peel back some tape covering. also if you have a trailer harness look closely at those.

Hi,
When you said that you checked the brake switch, did you check it live? Meaning verified live power to the switch, press switch, and then power came out the other terminal?
If so, also verify zero power on brake press, at the offending brake light bulb terminal. You must verify the test light each time you move it...leave running lights on...
After verifying that there is no power coming, after the brake is pressed, note the wire color and find it where it comes to the steering column and test there... This would eliminate wires and connections between front and the rear of the vehicle, unlikely, but needs to be tested.
After verifying no power at that terminal, then yes the t/s switch is certainly suspece. This may be the time to get a mechanic to verify and replace the switch, there are locks, tilt mechanisms, air bags, column bearings, etc involved. Failures risk loss of vehicle control (locking or binding for example.)..
