When I go to turn the wheel in my 2000 ford ranger I hear loud squealing noises. I checked the power steering fluid and its full. What can it be?The squealing starts as soon as I turn the wheel to the left or right.

Check your power steering fluid level. If it's a creaking noise you may need new struts. If it's a squeal, then it's might be a loose or worn belt.

Wheel bearings. Or cv shaft bearings. Most likely the cv.

Do you hear noises while turning the wheel at low speeds or stationary? If you hear a whining noise check the power steering fluid level. A low fluid level would make a whining noise as well as cause stiff steering. If you hear a squealing noise check the power steering belt tension. A slipping belt would cause stiff steering also. If you hear no abnormal noises check to make sure the power steering belt is there. If all of the above check out ok you may have a bad power steering pump, steering gear or a blockage in a pressure line.

Most likely this is your power steering pump - check the fluid and listen again.

The ford power steering pumps are known for a loud noise and even new ones make plenty of noise - especially when you turn the wheels. Keeping them full of fluid helps them be a little quieter.

Could be either a loose belt or you are low on power steering fluid,or the power steering pump could just be worn out.

hi there, there are some things that u need to check, one is power steering fluid in the resovoir, is the system leaking, is the belt in good condition, do you hear a loud noise coming from the pump when the vehicle is running and you turn the wheel hard in both direction

It sounds like the power steering belt is too loose, tighten it up a bit but not too much just enough to make slipping belt stop.

tazvtaz: If you only hear this noise when turning, I would start with the power steering assembly. 1.Check to verify if you have the proper level of power steering fluid first, if not add fluid as required. 2.Chekc for leaks around the power steering assembly, power steering hoses and replace or repair as required. 3.If the problem still exists, then your power steering motor may be on it's way out. You can verify if the noise is coming from the power steering assembly by having an assistant starting the car (in park)and turning the steering wheel, while you observe the operation of the power steering motor and determine if this is where the source of noise your are hearing is coming from. Check and make sure that upper or lower ball joints are good listen for noise on the OUTSIDE of vehicle. Good Luck. thanks for using FIX YA

If there is fluid in the pump and it makes noise, that may indicate that the pump is going bad. Some PS pumps just make noise. Ford pumps, for example make a lot of noise, and there is nothing wrong with them. If it's a squeal, it might mean the bearings in the pump are going bad.
