Sounds like your idle air control valve is going out on you. The IAC is located on the throttle body which is where the air duct tube ends coming from the air filter. I had same issue with my Cobalt. Told to buy mass air flow cleaner and spray into throttle body while car is running. Follow the instructions above to access the throttle body. Was told to do this on regular intervals as part of my preventive maintenance every three months. Clean more frequently if in a dusty or dirty environment.
Check your air filter, and if you haven't change your fuel filter. Other than this you can run some fuel injector cleaner through the system. These should all start to help, if the problem persists have your fuel system pressure checked.
