What would cause temperature gauge bouncing ?

1996 Buick Century Limited, temperature gauge bounces all over the place. The faster the engine revs, the faster the needle bounces. Goes back to normal as soon as you let off the gas then starts bouncing again as soon as you rev it up. Any ideas?Happens as soon as I start the car. Does it in Park and continues while I am driving. Acts like a tachometer but this car does not have a tachometer.

Sounds like the sending unit has an intermittent short to ground. Unhook the the wire from the sending unit, and see if the needle stops jumping around. If it quits jumping around, replace the sending unit. If it still jumps around, you have a bare spot somewhere on the wire and it is hitting ground which will cause the needle to jump. Cut out the bad part of the wire and splice in a new section. That should fix it.

1995 buick gas gauge doesn't work and temperature gauge bounced eradicating?

There is a small voltage regulator on the back of the instrument cluster. Getting at it requires taking the dash apart. Not an easy job.

Either that or the gauge itself is at fault. I don't know your car specifically but the temp sensor on an engine is usually near the thermostat housing.

Might be. Could also be dropping because of the low RPM before the engine stops. What happens if you shift to neutral when you come to a stop ?

I would check that the battery terminals are tight as they may have been removed to do the switch If they have been removed then I suggest a cpu reset

I have a 1999 Ford Explorer. On the way home from work, the oil gauge suddenly started bouncing all over the place. What could be causing this?

definitely change it as soon as possible. maintaining your vehicle is important. the engine wears down faster without proper oil. Also just because it has oil doesn't mean its ok. old oil carries metal shaving from your engine. that's why you need to change it regularly.

Erratic temp guage but not overheating

Probably the sending unit, and cost about $30.
The test of the gauges is to remove wire from sending unit and watch gauge go to lowest, then ground the wire and watch it go to highest.
If it does, then not a problem with gauge. So must be sending unit.
