96 sunfire that whines when excelleration

Disconnect big red power wire from alternator then turn on key . if fuse is good alternator is no good

may be the battery is broken, or the starter, or the ignition.

First thing to check is the fuel pressure at the injectors.

Sounds like a fuel feed problem.

check your motor mounts also your catlic converter shield

you have a hydrolic tensinor that tightens the chain. i would replace this from what you are describing the tensionor is going out and needs to be replaced.

check spark plug wires and coils for moistore put some lube on the coil wires check for spark after it wont start if itll crank but not start its 1 of 2 thinks no spark or no fuel usally when the coils get too wet they wont allow spark to come through or will cause it to arc

I believe that year has 3 coils on top of an ignition module (v6) ck for any visual burn or arc marks - these were famous for failing on many GM models of that era

you have a broken piece inside your duck system probably when you hit a pothole or bump into something being that is made of plastic chances is something broke off
